I ask everyone who comes into the hospital if they are vaccinated because it’s an important piece of information, as it strongly predicts how their disease will progress. A vaccinated patient is exponentially less likely to progress to severe disease and death than an unvaccinated patient. It’s as relevant as whether or not they smoke or have heart disease, to use other examples.

But in reality most patients who end up in the ER freely offer that information up without even asking. The ones who are vaccinated often want to know how they still got the disease, and many of those who aren’t have begun to realize that they may be at higher risk of severe disease because they’ve been googling it since they got sick. So I often don’t even need to ask.

But the short answer to your question is yes, we know who is and is not vaccinated.
