We've intercepted Russian assets up there on a weekly basis for years, but I don't recall Chinese assets alone or with Russians.

We pulled this off in Normandy because Germany (less than 1/10 the size of China) had been fighting two fronts for several years and there were no satellites to track this crap. We literally fooled them with glorified bounce houses.
MAYBE they go with an embargo, but that would still be inviting an all out, “non-surprise” confrontation with the US and several allies in the area.

They weren't. I'm the most hard-line conservative you'll run across, but the stuff with the Chinese balloon was some of the best intelligence we've gathered in decades. Whoever authorized that operation in China is probably rotting in a shallow grave right now.
