I saw the left attempt this defense with Bill Clinton. When his lying became impossible to deny, they shifted to "Well, every politician lies", as if they were incapable of distinguishing between the average politician and Clinton.
Trump has always been something of a caricature when it comes to looks. I don't think it's a big deal, but they've back themselves into a corner with the BOOOOOOTS!!! issue so they have to spin it somehow.
