He didn't confuse the Hawks and Hawkeyes. He lied about what the texts showed. There isn't a reference to Hawks or Hawkeyes.
Schmitt was caught in a cheap lie...while accusing Smith of perjury. Yes, Smith IS a dirt bag.
To the general public, though, Schmitt actually managed to make Smith look good and the Republicans on the Committee who didn't call out Schmitt look REALLY bad.

No reference to Hawks or Atlanta. ZERO evidence of Smith being in Atlanta on 2/3/24. There is already video corroborating Smith's presence at the Maryland/Iowa game on 2/3/24.

I don’t think it’s just his staff. All of this was most definitely coordinated among committee staffers prior to today.
Also, it looks like there was PR planning connected with this. Influencers had their tweets ready. Jim Vandehei put out a piece in Axios this morning that Schmitt has grown close to Vance and that he’s seen as a top VP pick for 2028. In addition, Schmitt scheduled interviews with other influencers today. It also looks like a lot of people were tipped off that this was going to happen.

This is beyond mind-boggling. I don't know how one adult---let alone several---can look at the text below and claim that it proved that Smith was in Atlanta.
By the time Schmitt BRIEFLY showed the text, he knew it was bullshite. He never moved it into the record.
Schmitt's behavior should be censured. He should be removed from the Judiciary Committee.

The "substance of the issue" was that Schmitt said he had proof that Smith lied about being in a particular arena in Atlanta colluding with Fani Willis, when in reality he was in a completely different arena in a completely different state seperated by over 600 miles. Smith could easily prove his whereabouts and Schmitt's "evidence" was a stupid assumption based on vague text messages.
