It is mind boggling how he screwed this up so bad. Schmidt or a staffer saw some wild conspiracy on social media and just ran with it.

These days, Congressional hearings are just dog and pony shows. What actually gets said or produced doesn't move the needle.
Just on a human level, it was amazing to watch the faces of Britt, Schmitt, and Schmitt's probably-already-fired staffers as they realized how badly Schmitt screwed up:

Just friend boy. He billed for an entire day of "meeting with White House counsel."
Not surprisingly, he couldn't recall any details---including with whom he actually met---when questioned under oath.

I think the real problem is he didn’t. No one will vote against him because of this in a Missouri senate primary or senate general. Schmitt facing zero consequences for this gaffe is a real problem for the US going forward.
The other problem is congressional oversight is yet another institution burned to the ground. The whole exercise has been so debased when democrats have the gavel every witness of consequence will plead the fifth and senators will act like clowns and each tribe will say some variation of “didn’t hear you complain when Fauci did it”

The only possible, criminal stuff was that Smith lied about his interaction with Office of Public Integrity.
Practically, though, the whole day was negated by Schmitt's lie and his fellow Republicans not calling him out for it.

Your probably right as far as permanent Senate membership...and that's a problem...but not a new one. See Ted Kennedy/Chappaquiddick.
I DO think this kills Schmitt's chances for VP with Vance.

That made me sick to my stomach. I literally didn't think that would be possible.
I'm so naive. I genuinely thought ANY Christian would have said: "Look, I stand by my general accusations against Jack Smith, but I had a lapse in judgment regarding the Atlanta allegation. I relied on my staff, but it was my responsibility to check on the accuracy of the statement. I apologize. I will do better."
To see a nominally Christian organization immediately welcome an unrepentant Schmitt is REALLY disappointing.
