Ireland had a potato famine which is why all the Irish came over here (mostly mid 1800's). Italy was once the pinnacle of European civilization (Roman empire and later in the Renaissance). Poland was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire which had one of the largest economies in the world until WWI collapsed it.

Every country has ups and downs, famines, depressions, wars, etc. But most Africa countries and Haiti have NEVER done shite in all of their existence. Haiti I don't blame so much because it's just an island (a slave island at that). But Africa, what have 90% of their countries ever achieved?

EDIT: Poland wasn't part of Austria-Hungary's empire (Poland was just north and east), but they were part of Prussia. They've had constant battles with the Russians to the east and the Germans to the West. Poor Poland has never had much peace.
