the three primary drivers behind the constitution were jefferson proposed it , madison wrote it and mason the bill of rights. all three owned large numbers of slaves. the notion that there was any real opposition to slavery or that we agreed to disagree is a fairy tell.
at the ratification of the constitution cotton production was non existent in the united states, it was the invention of the cotton gin in 1793 and the war of 1812 that kicked started cotton production in the united states. think of cotton as the crypto currency of it's day very risky but you could make a generational fortune off a single crop of cotton.
when i got my series 3 license in 1985 ( for all you mensa members on the poli board that's a license to sell commodity's) there was still a contract for hand picked cotton. the mechanical picking of cotton was not large spread until 1995 when cotton was genetically modified to have the bolls form higher up on the stem and be resistant to weevil infestation.

Funny that the OP thinks they know more about the everyday doings of people 240 years ago more than their contemporaries.

1. Amendment banning federal govt from establishing any form of welfare. Such programs can only be established by states
2. Limit judicial branch where only Supreme Court has jurisdiction to strike down actions by Congress or a president as unconstitutional. Lower courts do not have such jurisdiction
3. Balanced budget amendment except during times of war declared by Congress. And any debt accrued during war must be paid back within 10 years. Taxation must never exceed 35% of an individual or corporations net income.
4. Congressional term limits. 3 terms for Senators. 5 terms for House of Representatives

You time travel and arrive at the constitution convention day 1.
You have 24 hour to convince the founding fathers to change their plans for the constitution.
Then you get 60 minutes on the floor to make your case.
I start with recalling as much history as I possibly can in order to convince them im legit.
I then tell them slavery in its form it will evolve to in the deep south is considered evil by God and its consequences will cause a major war and the decay of the country in modern times. It must be stopped and we must ship Africans back to their homeland.
I then talk about how allowing women to vote destroyed any chance the Constitution will preserved in its intended form. Strict language must prevent it.
I then tell them to clarify the right to own firearms(though I doubt its necessary after the first two changes)
Finally I tell them how the US government evolved and all its abuses of the taxpayer. These were the smartest, most capable men that were ever in charge of this country. They can figure it out

1) have specific provisions in the document regarding secession - states can legally secede after 25 years if they so choose (gotta give it time to work)
2) clearly specify the authority of the federal courts/SCOTUS regarding judicial review - with a legislative/executive veto if you are going to let it declare actions/statutes unconstitutional

if that war had been fought over slavery it wouldn't have been fought. that war was fought because the excise tax on cotton was 90% of federal revenue and the republicans notion of manifest destiny, a country from sea to shining sea was not embraced by southern democrats, who saw it for what it was a plan to pack the senate. the north couldn't afford allowing the south to leave and build a trans continental rail road.
after the war we added 16 states and 28 republican senators and 4 democrat senators, so the south was right in their assumptions.
most of the states added after the war have still not attracted a population but they all have two senators. wouldn't it have made more since to keep them as territories? for the record there was no language in the constitution on succession had there been it wouldn't have been ratified.

I pushed for amendments to the constitution guaranteeing individual rights to free speech, right to bear arms, etc. Might have to go back for some tweaks.

I disagree. I dont agree that slavery was justification for the actions of the northern states...but the Southern economy would have developed differently without slaves
