I understand it’s impact on the economies where it is very prevalent and that’s of huge importance. Can’t just be yanking away jobs like that prematurely just because.

But isn’t the long term goal to get to the point where all the energy we need comes from solar and wind? Is there ever a future where they can be harnessed efficiently enough to meet our power demands? Or is nuclear really the only long term “clean” option to give us the power we really need to function.

No it's efficiency

No. By their very nature renewables will never be able to be the primary power source for the grid.

Yes. Until we eventually figure out fusion or something more exotic like zero-point energy.

Fossil fuels are a myth. Oil doesn't come from dead dinosaurs.

Oil is actually renewable

Solar and wind will never be effective enough to reach our power demands. They know this, its just a money grab they get paid big bucks to install a windmill

No.

The goal it to break the first law of thermodynamics, which is unattainable in this Newtonian world.

Not MY end goal...energy has been to power that has lifted mankind to the kind of lifestyle we now enjoy. The very idea of turning your back on an energy dense form of it is stupid.

If...and, it is an amazingly high "If bar", the renewables can equal the cost of the non-renewables..then sure. Otherwise, leaving a single lump of coal or drop of oil unused is ridiculous.

This will never happen. Ever. Look at geography first off, as most of the world is simply not capable of serving 1st world energy needs with solar and wind.

Second, you have to take up usable land to build the shite. There are more than a few cases of solar farms becoming scrap yards.

During this administration?

Transitioning away from fossil fuels without readily available equivalent alternatives is economic suicide.

No, the end vision of the energy industry is to be efficient.

That's why the oil and gas industry strives to reduce emissions, not eliminate them...because emissions are waste.

I can’t take a liberal climate change sky screamer seriously until they want to start talking about nuclear power.

We are going to always need oil for the products that are derived from it, regardless of energy production from other sources. Oil is what makes modern life possible, from plastics, synthetic materials, etc.. The only option is to go back to pre-20th century living.

Which we've mastered. Frackers have done more for world security than any person, government policy, or war ever has.

Technology drives everything. Horses were replaced with steam power. Steam power was replaced by combustible engines.

Combustible engines will be replaced at some point but it won't be by wind. Solar technology has all kinds of issues including availability in numerous climates and the problems with storing it.

Energy and technology is market driven. Always has been and always will be.

Eventually in say 300-500 years the world will have to be off of fossil fuels, so their should be very slow move to other energy types. The problem is the fear mongering, and that is being done for political and money reasons.

Also, solar and wind are not "clean", to be honest even things like coal are basically "clean" at this point with newer technology... that is why they changed it from pollution to climate change i.e. carbon.

Realistically, without significantly better battery technology (which is not clean anyway) the only real option is nuclear.

Also, all carbons on the planet will burn, its just the rate of the burn that can be changed as we have a molten core.
