Serious review and remediation of the designs of school buildings in terms of numbers of access points. Armed veterans, number determined by the local district to best suit the needs of the schools in it, to replace SROs. I think veterans are more qualified and, on the whole, would be more effective at securing the school for many reasons.

Easiest solution going forward. I don’t support media censorship, but something must be done about this.

One thing I've noticed is, most of these shootings seems to happen at these isolated suburban style HS campuses that are sort of entities unto themselves and generally disconnected from any surrounding neighborhoods and residences. I've always preferred the older style big school building sitting in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

I don't know if that has anything to do with anything, I just don't know why we went to that current model of schools and got away from what we had for so many years.

You know, I bet there were no school shootings in North Korea last year. I know that sounds absurd, but it demonstrates the essential tension of living in a free country. Many many more free people will make really really bad decisions in a free country . And most people are willing to take their chances with the freedom than without.

Freedom comes with a cost and some negative consequences

But when you have a strange pattern of tragedies like this it's at least worth looking into the root causes to see what can be done to prevent them

One thing is for sure. If the mental health of our youth is in this poor of shape school shootings won't be the only consequences.

Yep, there is a price to pay for living in a free country.

Yea, it is love thy neighbor once again. Show compassion for human life. Realize that murder is evil. Families start staying together and being strong showing love and compassion to each other.

Answers aren't coming from government that I can guarantee you.

Funny how I see churches in every corner yet society seems to be as sick as it has ever been. Weird correlation: more churches more society falls. Inverse relationship I would assume.

Remove gun-free zones. Mass shootings don't typically occur where the death count is going to be low before the attacker is neutralized.

"Thoughts" are pointless, I'll grant you. Prayers may or may not be answered in the affirmative depending on the will of God. He's not a genie.

Want me to use crayons? Here goes:

Tammy teacher is packing heat. Harry headcase is pissed about his grade, his girlfriend or his life in general and easily overtakes Tammy teacher and arms himself. Harry Headcase otherwise wouldn’t have easy access to a gun but thanks to the “teachers packing heat” rule, he now does.

It can’t be fixed.

If we had a magic solution today it would still be 15-20 years before anything changed.

It is a deep rooted, cultural problem.

We are seeing the manifestation of the “participation trophy” generations people have warned about for years.

Life is hard. Life is full of rejection, disappointment and attacks on our perceptions of ourselves. Navigating those hardships is what builds character and gives individuals the callouses needed to function.

Our culture is producing weak minded, self absorbed kids that have been sold a bill of lies. They don’t have the armor that is required.

They don’t learn lessons. They have never been in left field and let a ball get by them in a 9th inning, tied game. They never have the chance to finally get an assfull of a bully and decide to whip his arse.

They are just weak.

Weakness leads to what we are seeing today.

Does Tammy Teacher have the gun holstered on her body when Harry Headcase tries to get it from her? If so, it's not as easy as you think due to retention from good holsters. While he's struggling to get it, Brave Barney and Courageous Christopher tackle Harry Headcase while Snitching Suzie runs to get the resource officer.

Because God is sovereign over all things, including evil, even if He isn't the author of it.

There are several but many do not wish to implement them.

One glaring one comes to mind though. When you are notified of a threat it may behoove you as a law enforcement agency to take steps to mitigate the threat.

I think this is partly explained by the suburbanization of our society. I live in a city of about 35k people, give or take, but during the day this swells to over 100k because we’re the economic hub in our region of the state. The majority of our schools are within 3 miles of the city center and in well populated areas of the city/county immediately surrounding the city. About half of our schools were built in the 70s or so and the other half have been fortunate enough to have been built or upgraded recently, but they all have high numbers of access points. It’s scary to think about. We didn’t when we went to school (not that long ago, I’m just under 30), but now thinking of the number of entry points in those schools is quite scary. Someone could easily slip in the school with the way they are designed with external doors leading right to classrooms. I pray nothing ever does happen, but I think most school buildings are poorly designed for today’s threats, even ones in the urban areas.

Mental illness is always the cause of mass shootings. If guns weren't available, then mentally ill people would lash out with knives, vehicles, poisons and any other means possible.

Our perception of mental illness is way off in this country. If mass shooters all had a physical illness in common, we'd rush to find ways of diagnosing and curing it. Why aren't we trying to diagnose and cure the mentally ill?

Why aren't we paying attention to the school kids who exhibit behavior that throws up red flags about mental illness? Why is everyone afraid to say, "Hey, Little Johnny is acting anti-socially. Let's see if there's something underlying his behavior?"
