quote:This is all based on reports and analysis we're getting from US news media.
I am no military expert, but I can compare what Russia is doing to past military operations. Ukraine is about 50% larger than Iraq and it took American forces about a month to get to and take Baghdad. The coalition sent in 177,000 ground troops into Iraq and it still took over a month.
So why is everyone saying Russia has failed just because they haven't taken a larger country (Ukraine) in under a week? Honest question.
OUR media covered OUR war, and made it seem spectacular. We rolled without resistance.
OUR media is now covering THEIR war, and reports Russia is getting their teeth kicked in. Somehow Russia is advancing, despite every report saying they are taking high losses and the Ukrainians are resisting heroically.
And this is a totally different set of circumstances, too. Somehow, the Iraqi army was touted as "the 4th largest army in the world". Maybe numbers because they drafted everyone for their war against Iran, which they couldn't win...
Does anyone honestly think Iraq could have beaten most of the European countries in a head-to-head conflict? They were using mostly older gen Soviet gear, several generations behind ours.
Ukraine, when it left the USSR, had a large amount of frontline Soviet gear. It WAS USSR, and it was an area that was prepped for the East-West conflict if it came.

This is correct. Saw someone else post that Russia does not have air control. If that was the case, this convoy would have been destroyed days ago.
Stop believing western media! They are the enemy to truth.

So far the whole damn thing appears to be a bar fight; both sides are letting their punches in but no cohesive strategy. I would imagine that the Russians do have a method to their madness, but it’s been hard to figure out.
At this point I would think they would completely surround and cut off Kyiv and Kharkiv, but not assault them directly. Link up your forces, figure out your logistics issues, then launch a general offensive towards the Diniper River.

It’s pretty simple. They started off with a pretty soft approach to limit damage and killing civilians. They have pivoted to a stronger approach because of resistance. I don’t think Russia expected it to be as easy as crimea, but they didn’t expect the current level of resistance. They are losing the information war. That will likely change as people run out of food and stay cold

No one knows.
We've absolute control over the flow of information coming out of Ukraine. So it's impossible to know what's actually going on. All we're getting is our demoralization campaign against Russia.

Kyiv is only like 80 miles from the Belarus border and the Russians were able to cover a decent chunk of that distance by going through the uninhabited Chernobyl exclusion zone as well.

Which means the Ukes should be able too see them glow in the dark.

Well, for one, I would expect Iraq (a fairly formidable army in its day) to put up a hell of a lot more fight than Ukraine. If I recall correctly, Iraq was the #4 team on the planet at one point in the not too distant past. They also had a more distinct home field advantage over us than would be the case between Russia and Ukraine.
Army numbers don’t mean shvt without an air force and formidable? They got wrecked in the gulf war, Iran war, stomped by Israel multiple times?

The Russians are running the preseason squad against Ukraine's first string and still has Kiev surrounded, I think they'll be fine.

What did Sun Tzu say? "wars are a moral contest". Russia is losing badly in this department. Even their lies/propaganda are not very good. The entire world (less China) is vehemently opposed to this invasion. No one is going to do business with Russia as long as Putin is in charge.
I am beginning to think Putin may lose this one and have to back out early. Even if they get control of the cities I'm betting Ukranians begin a gorilla war that never ends. And how long can Putin support the war when his economy has been utterly destroyed?

Most of the time we spent getting to Baghdad was because of operational pauses. Higher command expected more resistance and when it didn’t materialize supply was being left in the dust.
Hell read the book about the tank assault on the capital - Thunder Run. You’ll understand more.

People keep saying this, but here are the countries not taking part in sanctions or are back end supporting Russia

Again, that's every country that's under Russia's control or doesn't matter.

India and China are irrelevant countries?

Communist Russia and Nazi Germany were morally equivalent despite Stalin being the murderer of more millions of innocent people.

I don't think most people are calling it a "failure."
In reality, the US spent fifty years painting USSR as a comparable force to Americans, when in reality they are much weaker with more and more destructive weapons.
Most of that has to do with lower and more sparse population that's hard to cobble a great ground and air force from. In short, their foot soldiers are nowhere near what the US inferred.
Ok, so we generally think of Russia as being a military powerhouse. Couple that with people grossly underestimating the size of Ukraine and its military, a lot of people expected it to be a walk in the park.
It's all about unrealistic expectations.
