Is the 80’s and 90’s the two best decades the best 20 years known to mankind..
Posted by chili pup

as far as a country? We didn’t bitch like kids today do. We lived with what was given to us. We were happy going bowling or skating on a Friday or Saturday night. You knew if you acted up there would be a parent there looking at all the kids and would tell your parents. It always got back home if you did something wrong. I miss those days.

Are
Oh, and 70's/80's or 80's/90's. All day. Every day.
Classic Rock.

I agree. The switch happened in the early 2000’s. Something happened. The gay boys would have got an attitude adjustment 4 years prior. Something broke down during that time.

The 2000 presidential election and 9/11 both brought us out of the era of good feelings we had been going through. The invasion of Iraq in 2003, and subsequent failure to find WMDs that we were promised were there, is what really put us over the edge. Things just got progressively worse from there.
Though one could argue that the Monica Lewinsky scandal in the late-90s was a harbinger of things to come.

80’s and 90’s
So basically the last two decades without widespread internet access.
I'm too young to know if it was America's "peak" but it's sure gone a ways downhill since then.

As someone who is old enough to vividly remember the mid 70s to today, I’d say the 80s was the apex of western civilization, followed by the 90s. The 90s were great, far and away better than today. But the cracks in the dam were already beginning to form.

The decline went full speed on 9/11. Bin Laden was successful.

They're the best decades if you want lots of murder, rape, and other violent crimes:
These discussions are always based in nostalgia. You can always guess the ages of people based on how they describe the 70s/80s/90s. However, media of the eras has not been erased and shows that the outlook was bleak and anxiety was high.
Outside of crime, I remember the 80s to an extent and it was filled with lots of economic anxiety and a fear that the Japanese were about to become our overlords. You can see this in various media of the time (Die Hard, Rising Sun, Black Rain, etc.).
The 90s were even more bleak. Gangsta rap and the East Coast-West Coast rap wars dominated the culture. Also, the crime was getting so bad in the 80s and 90s that you had real scary projections of just how bad the mid-late 90s were going to be. Robocop, Demolition Man, etc.
Outside of comedies (and to a large extent, fantasies) like John Hughes movies, projecting the time on screen was very bleak with lots of grit, grime, and anxiety. These were not the halcyon days that we remember as kids because (a) we were kids and (b) we were less developed and ignorant kids b/c of the lack of the internet. We were allowed to live in a fantasy and believe it while the world crumbled around us.

Your point on the Japs is noted. There was concern about all the tech stuff and cars being made in Japan.
But no one was afraid of the Japs taking over our country.
And your movie references to illustrate your point are not good. Heck, Takagi is a liked character.
Black Rain is about Yakuza.
I honestly don’t remember what Rising Sun was about and not looking it up. I am guessing the one with Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes.
