Huge mistake. They’re no longer dealing with a covert ally in the White House.

My deepest condolences to @washingtonpost. May the mourning of yet another austere religious or perhaps military scholar prove bearable.

Thought the same thing. This is fascinating. Israel, France, and Britain on standby and were ready to move troops once it happened.

Something about the timing of the terrorist intel we gave Putin a week ago make me put my money on the Russians giving Soleimani up.

The Iranians are usually pragmatic and measured in how they achieve their regional aims as well as how they foster alliances. Their proxies have lots of leeway to act independently of direct oversight, and generally they practice better opsec than this.

They always are when you have a gutless incompetent like the previous administration. With the present CiC, I'm guessing the Iranian PTB are reviewing their play sheet.

Possible, but unlikely. I don't think Soleimani was actually pictured until the 2010s, or so the rumors go. It would beggar belief that Soleimani would suddenly drop opsec if he was in Bagdhad for an operation. It is just as likely that he was lured into a trap, with the end result being the same.
