what difference does it make if they are traveling as part of their job or not? you have to eat wherever you are.
Because if you're traveling for work, you're pretty much forced to dine out at a restaurant for all 3 meals a day. Takes away the option to eat at home and pack a lunch for employees trying to save money...hence the per diem.

I guess the question comes in whether or not the per diem is enough to cover the costs of in-flight foods. If you are expected to fly for extended trips (referenced 12-hour flights), you will need to eat something on flight. And if you are not allowed to brown bag it, you are forced to eat and pay for whatever is served.

Per diem rates for DC is 80 bucks a day.

The article in politico says somewhere around 50 dollars a day. That leaves 30 dollars of free cash left over if you ate all three meals on the plane. I guess they would be burning that up with wine and beer.

In fact, some White House entry-level assistants make around $47,000 annually, which is well below the median income in the D.C. area.

Yet, that salary is still well above the average individual US income level per person. Douche.

The way DC is set up now, everyone of these even low level "staffers" will have their pick of multiple 6 figure K Street jobs upon their sacrificial "tour of duty" of having to buy airplane meals on Air Force 2. Normal people understand this, suck it up, and even harbor gratitude for overall opportunity of the whole thing.

It's an embarrassing article on multiple levels.

Again, they get per diem that more than covers the cost of three meals

Oh. No free filet on taxpayers dime? I feel bad for them.

Well it is free. Taxpayers are paying them all to fly in that jet. Plus they get to expense it or at least some of it. BTW... I have a suggestion. How about pack a fricking lunch?

Does the media only come out with these stories when the Dems are in charge? I swear I don’t think I’ve ever seen an article about the hardships of low level staffers when Republicans are in charge.
