Just read the posts here about Israel and the US military interventions in Iran and Gaza.

It's not a mystery.

Look up Operation Meetinghouse from WWII. Over 100,000 civilian casualties in one night. Left a million Japanese civilians homeless.

And it was deliberate.

Not saying that was a good thing, but people used to understand that people—including innocent civilians—died when a nation went to war. That's one of the big reasons you would try to avoid going to war.

Now a stray bomb accidentally hits a school in an isolated incident and 120 children die and people run around screaming "War Crimes."

THIS is the universal repulsion to actual war - it means that innocent civilians are merely another resource to be managed - war means eliminate the enemy as the only goal.

That is why it is to be avoided at all costs = up until that cost cannot be borne anymore

I'll never have a rosy view of targeting and mass murdering civilians. I also find those who hold themselves as moral while championing such things to be either confused or liars.

Not many nations have ever cared about the common populace during war. The people did not go to war. The country and its leaders did. The people were just forced to fight and suffer.

Basically people here are comparing a time when there were no guided weapons to today. Today we can surgically strike anywhere at any time. There is less war today than at any other time in history because world leaders now know that they can easily become targets while the people are left alone.

There is less war today than any other time in history because of the endgame weapons. So yeah, ask for total war today. You won't like what it will cost you. The endgame costs everything.
