In Rome. Had a win-win encounter with liberal expat in the Metro.

She’s from California, a school teacher, and has been living in Rome for 20 years.
She loves Italy, “free healthcare”, cheap universities for her children, no ICE, no Trump, etc.
I told her that I was incredibly happy for her, and that I will sleep happily tonight knowing she is living in socialist nirvana. I hoped she and her children would never have to return to MAGA hell!!
Unfortunately when she gets older and needs real health care, she’ll probably fly to home and vote Democrat.

They are screwed. Need immigration which will bring its own problems.

Universal healthcare relies on a classic demographic pyramid: a large base of working-age people paying income and corporate taxes (IRPEF and IRAP) to fund the medical needs of a smaller, older population.
Italy's working-age population is projected to shrink by 7.8 million people by 2050. As the tax base shrinks, the number of elderly patients requiring intensive medical resources climbs steeply. This threatens a fiscal "scissors effect" where public revenues fall exactly as healthcare demand peaks.
quote:
Public health systems were historically built for acute care—treating a broken leg, an infection, or a sudden heart attack.
An aging population primarily suffers from multimorbidity (living with multiple concurrent chronic diseases like arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, and cognitive decline). Managing chronic conditions requires ongoing, lifelong primary care rather than brief hospital stays. This strains the public system, causing long waiting lists for routine diagnostic scans and specialist visits, which pushes frustrated citizens into the private sector out-of-pocket.
quote:
The shortage of healthcare professionals is exacerbated because the doctors and nurses themselves are aging out of the workforce.
Strict budget caps imposed in previous decades limited hiring. Consequently, Italy has an exceptionally high average age among its practicing public physicians. As large waves of doctors retire over the next decade, there are not enough medical graduates entering low-paying specialties like emergency medicine or family practice to replace them, leaving the system understaffed at a time of record patient volume.

Your skepticism is well founded. I wouldn’t believe me either. But Metro line A 2 stops from the terminal stop.

Oh, I have no doubt that you are indeed in Rome.

Surprised you didn't get stabbed frankly.

GLP1s will fix some of that stuff. Need universal GLP1.

Rome is an awesome. Super friendly people, incredible sites, and I never felt unsafe. That is all I’ve got.

Searching for things to be disgruntled about while on vacation is Rome is not a good look.
