Today we shrug our shoulders every other day when another healthy young athlete drops dead.

Scared me away from ever using cocaine. I think it was the first time he tried it when he died.

I was in the D.C. Superior Court the day I heard about the death. I friend of mine, a court room clerk, was horribly upset. I found out that he was Len Bias' cousin. Very sad. Bias had a terrific future had he not experimented with drugs.

Not just you. Drug use went down for the next seven years.

Started coming back as people came of age who were too young to remember.

Compare the news cycle and the social media from then to now. That adds to the scale of his passing.

Compare the news cycle and the social media from then to now. That is why the ho-hum attitude exits.

Yep, NBA lottery picks are dropping dead left and right of drug overdoses and nobody...

Hank Gathers' on-court death was exponentially more devastating.

Most NBA players today still aren't OD'ing on coke.

I’m old enough to remember when his dad was born.
What’s your point?

There was no internet then and fewer channels of distraction. Everyone watched the same news and it was not initially known he died of cocaine.

When has there been another time in history where an All-American selected #2 overall by the current NBA Champion unexpectedly died 2 days after being picked? It was covered as a big event …because it WAS a big event.

I, like (presumably) you, think the pandemic was overblown. But to compare the newsworthiness of Bias’s death to that of obscure athletes largely unknown to anyone but their friends and family is a terrible comparison

Uh, no, I think not. He'd been using for a while.

Physical specimen and dominated in college. Tough call about his NBA career... Lots of big dudes there.
