I’m not a fan of the Trump Administration’s approach to teaching US history

I come from the school of Dan Carlin. I believe in teaching kids the good, the bad and the ugly of America’s story. What I don’t believe in is blacklisting subjects like how we put Japanese-Americans into camps or Indians into Christian like boarding schools against their will. Pretending like these horrific stuff didn’t happen is just tom foolery
. I voted for Trump but if this makes me un-American so be it.

None of this is part of any proposal Trump is part of. Quit making shite up.

OK - at what age do you think these topics are appropriate?
There is plenty of time for students to learn all the bad stuff that ever happened, once they have absorbed the basic factors that shaped the good points of the overall American Culture.
Certainly as advanced topics that can auger in on all the minutia and ancillary events that had an effect on our progress - when they are able to weigh the good and bad of both sides.
What is NOT ok is for some hot-headed cultist with a big hard-on for any current conservative policy to just start exposing ALL the dirty laundry while students are just trying to wrap their heads around the tremendous story that represents the the long and winding trail that has us where we are today.
It would be like trying to introduce the concept of genetics on the origin of the current biological state. It would be foolish to spend a huge amount of time on demanding they 'learn' all the genetical wrong turns that went extent a few hundred million years ago. Leave that for advanced topics -

What is most important in 'education' (meaning the basic essential stuff that CURRENTLY defines our desire cultural state) is to concentrate on THAT.
To introduce all the mistakes and wrong turns - whether intentional or bad luck dilutes the process and makes it way to overloaded with facts not essential to the basic task.
There is plenty of time for the tangential stuff -
BUT there SHOULD be a topic for advanced study for students who have mastered the BASICS that covers some of the more egregious mistakes we have made - such as those you hi-lighted. But it needs to be presented as analyses of the cultural/political/economic factors that led to these mistakes NOT to just dump shite on us for not being perfect in the 'hindsight' of current political shite-stirrers.
Your approach to this topic makes me think you are of the latter type.

Uh- the very first semester would not have any teaching changes

I prefer history to be taught as it happened. Not through the judgmental lenses of today. Actions, attitudes, etc. change over time.

I agree, it wouldn’t be surprising. And there should not be a reason to whitewash it out of history.

Kudos. A well-articulated, very reasonable approach.
