Mini splits have a condensate drain line that you either route outside through a wall or connect into a vent stack or other drain within the house.
to tie into the house vent you need to install a p-trap to prevent sewer gas. make sure you wrap the trap in insulation as well to prevent condensate.
code wise you can't dump condensate directly on the ground. need to dig a hole and fill it with gravel and terminate the drain line into the gravel pit

I did the math on the benefit to cost on 18 v 14 v 16seer. My electricity bill was too low to benefit from the upgrade. The payback was essentially the life expectancy of the system. Factor in, time value of money.... Not worth it.
You left out a factor, which is that by lowering your electric bill less greenhouse gas is emitted. This is a benefit that accrues to society instead of just to you, but theoretically you are benefiting a small amount from everyone else doing it. It’s sort of like a catalytic converter, which never pays back to the owner.

Oh noes the refrigerant is flammable!!!
Do you realize how many things in your life are flammable? Ever look at an MSDS of common chemicals? We probably should research using propane or butane for a refrigerant if we want a cheap option but we won't because people KNOW those are flammable, damn if they are cheap and effective.
I mean, I guess if you went around your refrigeration lines with a flame thrower to look for leaks the refrigerant being flammable would cause a concern. I am sure that is how you look for gas line leaks.

I would guess if parts aren't available they would upgrade to the replacement.
You have a lot more faith in your A/C guy than I have in mine…

It’s so fricking maddening. Manmade global warming isn’t real.

quote:So how much Freon is actually leaked into the air from air conditioners? It's as ridiculous as banning chlorofluorocarbons the propellent in medical inhalers back in the early to mid 2000s. Asthmatics now spend thousands instead of hundreds on inhalers (per year). What a miniscule amount of CFCs into to environment. Total stupidity!!!
Add it to the list of things Obama and Biden fricked up.

I do have faith in my AC guy but that is irrelevant to this. The unit itself has a 10 year warranty. If it fails in some way before that warranty is up then they will have fix or replace it if they cannot supply the parts to fix it.

I have a big home with a really old fan thingy outside but the system in the basement is still pretty new.
Should I get a new fan thingy that goes outside and just store it in the basement until I need it?
No! Don’t buy the outdoor thingy…..Save big money by selling your McMansion, buy a van and live by the river.

Had my AC replaced in Feb. No 14 SEER units available then.
Your ac guy probably just told you that to make more money. They are still available even 13 seer if you look for them.

If you think your condensor is on it's last legs, you might want to deal with it sooner rather than later.
So if I got new everything except the condenser in the last year, I’ll have to do it all over again if the condenser goes out?
My condenser is 14 years old but still in good shape. I was hoping to ride it until it died then grab a new one.

My A/C man told me that there will be no more SEER 14 units available at the end of the year.
Your ac man is just trying to charge you more. I work in hvac and we have builders still getting 13 seer.
Some codes FL and CA are making it harder to pass with 14 SEER but it's not nationwide.
quote:
The issue is that if your current system's condensor goes out but you have a good internal air handler you will have to replace both because your perfectly good air handler will not be compatible with the 16 SEER condensor
This is false. You can match a 16 SEER condenser with a 14 SEER air handler just fine it just won't be efficient as a 16 SEER. Most companies have matched units that have 15/16 SEER condenser with 14 SEER air handler.

So it sounds like there is a lot of knowledge on this thread. So I will ask what should I do as far as replacing my existing set up. Running R22 right now. System and house is 15 years old. Options?
Posted on 5/7/22 at 8:37 pm to TrueTiger
Our a/c guy has been saying this for 10 years. It’s a push to get you to drop big bucks for new unit. We have 2 and they are both R22 and we ended up changing repairmen to a guy that does multiple home repairs and he didn’t even mention it this season
