Data centers will certainly bring good paying jobs and taxes for the towns and counties. Perhaps, they should provide their own power systems though.

How are data centers any worse than plants and factories? They even provide their own electrical power and water supplies and are under EPA regulations. It’s like solar farms. It’s the future. It’s progress. Idiots are complaining without any facts.

They absolutely do not create lots of permanent jobs. They also aren’t bringing in a lot of taxes considering they are getting massive abatement deals on them and by the time they would pay property tax on that property it’s been disposed of because it’s obsolete.

I can distrust big tech but still understand the need for the US to win the AI race.
The people calling for a ban on data centers do not really want a world where Chinese AI can easily hack into any US system.
We can argue about the location and tax liability of data centers. But refusing to build them shouldn't even be considered. And there are people calling for this.
Mass surveillance is a completely separate issue. You can't forego something as powerful as AI just because it can be used for bad. People need to be more active to prevent the misuses instead of shutting it down.
How many people actually go to city council meetings?
How many actually tell their neighbors to stand up with them?
How many form actual organizations to inform and unite the local population to keep out mass surveillance?
How many actual protests in your local community are being held?
We have a habit of making everything all or nothing, but it doesn't have to be that way if we are more proactive.

I don’t feel strongly against data centers. I could see why communities would be apprehensive given they do not produce permanent jobs and take up large swaths of land and resources. If places like Richland Parish want them, sure that makes sense.
I do think it’s stupid for Trump to call those who may be apprehensive “poor and backwards” without making any coherent argument to the contrary.
