Dude. It’s never going to happen.

Maybe we can pay another country to take Alabama, but that would take a YUGE amount of money, probably doubling the debt.

The “rich” could be taxed at 100% and it wouldn’t even dent out debt. We have a spending problem. You are right about defense being a major part of it.

The coming gridlock will help a little.

Money is a power, as a tool that enables the relatively stable production and disbursement of basic, life supporting goods and services. It's a mean to an end, and all about the survival and prosperity of the Human Species.
Of course, what all the current (Moral Political)hoopla is about, is the Disbursement (read relative affluence/freedom) Criteria; I.e., who gets what and how much for doing what. Human assessed value, Egalitarian Ideology vs Merit-based. Even Jesus Gospel is paradoxical, in that both Mercy and Merit apply as the criteria for ultimate (Spiritual) survival and prosperity.
There is a Book named "Abundance" (not Robert Reich's) that examines the affect of coming High Tech on the Economy and Debt. The word "ubiquitous" is heavily employed from cover to cover. A Lib wrote it (Hillary hire), but He's smart and seems honest; and seems less focused on Morality than practicality and Science. The gist of the Book is easily grasped, and uplifting, IMO. Optimistic for sure.
Stability, prosperity and progress far outweigh the economic principles of a traditional economic process (Capitalism, Socialism, etc.) which will essentially be outmoded...IF Humanity is able to maintain the kind of technological progress imagined in the Book. Money and numbers and debt be damned. Of course, any Systematic form of High Tech, Government-subsidized subsistence for any and all Humans, had better have a Value-based set of Qualifiers for/which Recipients can understand and believe in as being just, and can therein apply themselves to serving...as the former Citizens (not so much any more) did per the Constitution and America. Minus that, Mother Nature runs the show, and MN is merciless.
Will be interesting to see how refinements to the Constitution, encompass the coming wave of changes in both the Moral and Economic paradigms.

The shutdown threats never materialize so both sides know it is nothing more than posturing. They truly have stopped fighting over the budget. I knew I was done with Republicans when they gave a budget to Obama to sign and he was happy. Neither side should be happy. They should both be left wanting. it isn't their fricking money.
It wasn't that long ago when a man with one million dollars was considered rich, now you need to be hitting 10-15 million to be considered well off.

Do we even care anymore?
Of course not - Republicans only care about the debt when they're out of power. Every time they're voted in, they vote for huge expansions of spending.
Every time.

It’s bad for the economy for the federal government to run at a surplus.
Or rather, not sustainable.
This is a given of modern economic reality.
If you control your own monetary policy, however, (I.e., not the states), this isn’t a problem as long as you keep the deficit within your GDP growth.
For fricks sake there is a thread about this on the front page now.

Clinton set the economy on track to be a net surplus. Then Bush came in and trickle-down'd it to death.

Obama reduced the deficit YOY every year he was in office.
Trump increased it, for no reason other than he subscribes to a failed economic theory.

You said "do the Dems" so I did. The last 2 Democratic Presidents helped shrink the deficit/debt. The last few Republican ones fricked it up, badly.
Seems like if you care about the federal debt, voting Republican is a stupid idea.

The one President who actually tackles this problem will be a marked man or woman. Imagine telling our nation “ok guys, we’re gonna have to cut back on spending. No new hiring, taxes gonna have to go up on everyday goods and your take-home is gonna be slightly less while we pay for what our previous generations did”.
They’d be out of office with the quickness
