Wouldn't a booming economy be the time to reduce the deficit? Do we even care anymore? Will we ever cut deficit spending?

Or do we just keep increasing the debt ceiling every few years, like we have for the past few decades?

If we stay at an average GDP of 2.6% (its higher right now) our national debt will have been cut in half by 2048. Obviously that timeframe moves up quite a bit if we stay at our current GDP, but the fact of the matter is that it would take a LONG time to whittle down 20+ trillion in debt regardless.

The national debt snowball has been rolling downhill for decades now, we're just now making moves to even slow it down. Removing restrictions that help indistrial business, policies friendly to American institutions encouraging companies to move back to the US, leveling the trade playing field, and less dependence than ever on foreign oil will help a shite ton - we just need it to last.

B.F. Skinner explains it in Psych 101. Behaviors which are positively reinforced continue. Politicians get rewarded for spending other people's money.

Trump doesn't seem to mind running the debt up which seems to be counter to what he does everywhere else. I think he knows it is all paper that will soon be worthless or something.

You know he has been bankrupt several times right?

It doesn't matter.

GEOTUS subscribes to the theory that if you owe too much to the bank, they own you. And if you owe so much to the bank that they can't let you fail, you in essence OWN THEM.

What does the debt matter? We don't have to make payments if we don't want to. We just do in order to keep up appearances, and all the world is fine with that. What would happen? Who would benefit from the US economy collapsing? Nobody, because we are so interconnected now. Okay, so what if somebody demanded their money!!!! So the Frick what, we have control of the oceans. We have the mightiest military in the world, and we have nukes. Come at us. It's Mutually Assured Destruction economically speaking. And if the worse was to pass, and some hoe nation decided to collapse our economy because they wanted all their money back at once....so be it, the world would falter altogether.

The key is always reducing spending. It never happens because it's never politically popular to cut.

No economy can reverse this until spending is reduced across the board 10% and then frozen for 5 years. Do that and then let’s see where we are.

yep.

Or just cut defense and war by 2% every year for 20 years.
Cut the rest by .5% for 20 years.

The U.S. currently collects record tax revenue, yet the deficit continues to skyrocket.

What will it take to convince people on the Left that it's a spending problem?

Merely suggesting cutting anything has become political suicide. Virginia is now blue because of it.

Fraud, waste, and abuse eats up around 20% of government spending.

Imagine being part of a political movement that sees the current condition and believing this country needs to spend more!

This is one of the biggest disappointing things about Trump.

I am on board for most of his stuff but I really thought he would make an effort to reduce spending.

Slow it down? The deficit is going to be much higher in 2019 than 2018.

The natural extension of your argument would be to reduces to zero because "cmon, they are dependent on us, what are they gonna do"?
