why do people keep talking about this?
Because people keep responding to these nut cases.

They just need to cut the fraud and waste out of it and it might actually be able to meet its legitimate obligations.

Yikes
Once again proving that the left makes decisions based on emotion while the right makes decisions based on facts and logic.

They cut those who wouldn’t be getting a check
1) illegals
2) deceased
3) foreign recipients
4) disability fraud
Remove the ones that don’t belong, and you extent the sustainability for those you earned it.

God I love what Trump is doing to the far left. I couldn't have draw up a better scenario for this group of people to suffer like they are now. I absolutely love every minute of it after dealing with Obama for 8 years and Puddin' Head for 4..

Does that including cutting the Fraud in Social Security as well because I can promise you there are billions of dollars being stolen from SS today?
There is already a report on waste/fraud in SS (and all government).
Here is another one, long before DOGE repeated the same numbers
quote:
2018-2022 Data Show Federal Government Loses an Estimated $233 Billion to $521 Billion Annually to Fraud, Based on Various Risk Environments
So if we cut non-discretionary spending to $0 we save 0.9T
If we account for all of this fraud (which double dips a great deal) we save $0.5T max
That means we only have to slash the military budget by 37.5% to break even.
The above also assumes stagnant interest payments, which, like the 0.5T in fraud, is way optimistic. We're likely back around 50% of defense spending once we get the final 2024 numbers

The only thing I recall Trump saying about social security is he wants to remove taxes on it.
Where are you hearing they want to cut it?
Looking into fraud and waste which could reduce the annual expenditures paid by SSA. Media spins it to say he wants to reduce the annual expenditures means he wants to lower your SS check
Trump wants to cut taxes on SS. Media clips it to say he wants to cut SS

Republicans will lose the next generation of elections. They'll be lucky to hold onto the reddest of red states.
This is such a stupid take. What they are doing is removing all the theft, waste and payments to illegals from it. If they are successful, they will make SS solvent again.
SS and Medicare are the third rail of American politics and why the Rinos and Dems don't get behind DOGE in this is incredible.
It is truly a gift Trump is giving them, but because OMB they don't see it for what it is.

How about if they just cut out all of the waste and fraud, like the 120 year-oldswho are supposedly still on the take?

That has nothing to do with a deficit. That has to do with debt.
We can't tackle the debt until we get on the other side of the annual deficit
So you think spending trillions in forever wars around the globe is just some side column that doesn't matter?
It all matters. You can't just discount that as coming from some other pocket of spending.
Also, social security has a direct tied income stream that offsets it. It's not enough to fully offset it, but looking at that number as a straight expense, like the Dept of Education, is incorrect.

Of course the math works. Let's say 10% of SS is fraudulent and can be rooted out (a conservative estimate). We saved 10% of the SS spending. There's your math.
That 10% can be used for infrastructure or other worthy causes, used to pay down the debt, or give it back to the tax-payers, or some combo.
Just because it doesn't erase the federal debt doesn't mean the math doesn't work. That's real money that can be repurposed.
If you go buy a serving of soy-latte, and instead of $4.50, it rings up $45.00, do you just shrug and say "Well, that's a small % of my annual spend, so no big deal, I'll come back next week for another $45.00 soy-latte.".
Get real.

Perfect analogy, baw.

Quit projecting. They’ve not said anything they would reasonably make one believe that existing taxpayers will have cuts. Then we won't have anywhere close to a balanced budget.
There’s a complexity to this that will need to be worked through the balance sheet of the us government. SS was intended to be off the books in a trust. We need to uphold that original intent, how we do that is the difficulty

No. I said it matters. It's accounted for in our debt, though.
Talking about the debt is a different conversation than talking about our deficit.
And as I said
quote:
We can't tackle the debt until we get on the other side of the annual deficit
quote:

That's not the distinction. The distinction is temporal. That money was already borrowed/spent in the past. It has no relationship to deficits in the future.

We would have to take the revenue for SS/Medicare and apply it to the general revenue sourcing, yes.
It also wouldn't be a 1:1 reduction, as every dollar we take out will negatively affect the economy and reduce tax receipts in kind, but we have to get everyone on the same page about the basic arithmetic of our budget-deficit situation first before we talk about those secondary and tertiary issues.

People melting because Trump and musk are trying to make it so we can actually be able to pay social security and not go bankrupt is amazing to see. Amazing to watch how dumb people like the OP are. Low iq people.
