Not really fun for a southerner.

I think most of us can see there was definitely a racial undertone to putting up the monuments with the context of the when. There's also the thumbing the nose at the north to remmeber as a motivation too.

The story of the overmatched south fighting hard and giving the north hell is a point of pride for a lot of the south, outside the context of slavery. Its certainly a lot more complicated than just racism. History is like that. Unfortunately, there is a racial component that shouldn't be ingorned or forgotten either.

Yeah, I'm pretty much resigned to the idea that sterilized nothingness will be the world of my children and grandchildren.

Putting up statues of random people does not make things less sterilized

We have the internet now. You can look them all up and read about it in seconds on billions of devices

They are however a useless waste of metal and public space. Obama statues, Regan statues, Union statues, confederate statues. Tear them all down and make cast iron fences out of them it would be a better use

I agree with all of this. Which is why this sudden rush and overnight invented outrage was so troubling.

Can you provide ANY historical references for this or is your opion now the basis for universal fact?

Im thinking you are upset statues are being taken down

I agree that targeting specific statues is wrong

I also am saying that just take all statues down. They are absolutely worthless. Every dollar spent on a statue since the internet has been a waste. Period. Statues were a thing before you could easily find this information.

But how will anyone ever have a book cover like this again, if you have your way?

That's an interesting perspective of the evolving idea of aesthetics. I don't agree with it, though.

Or at least, I don't think I like it.

Cool. Think about that the next time you have an idea for a thread.

John Oliver did a thoroughly entertaining breakdown of this issue recently.

When were a large amount of them put up and what was happening in our country during those time periods? This isn't difficult, and anyone pretending they know anything about this should know the answers.

Saw it. Laughed. His point is taken on the racial aspects at play and why the place the Confederacy has in the southern imagination is hard for an outsider to understand.

They typically omit the narrative of the ragtag Southerners fighting off the Yankees for so long and the role that plays in pride of being from the south. It isn't about the good ole days when the blacks knew their place for most.

Of course, those hard up to defend the statues tend to ignore the racism that was an inspiration for many of them at the time they were put up.

I guess that for most, losing is an odd thing to be so fervently proud of for so long.

I get that.

Let's just say southern history isn't full of proud moments. A poor agricultural area, remmebered for slavery, Jim Crow, losing the civil war. The memory of a hard fight while overmatched because we was some hard fighting motherfrickers makes for a combined memory to be proud of, despite the result and one of the primary reasons for the war.

Its apparent to me, having grown up in the deep south and obvious why the rest of the country doesn't understand it at all, especially given the context of the war.

I watched a bit of that.

Didn't change my views at all.

Now that I am aware that John Oliver exists, I will avoid anything associated with him.

Avoidance or filters, all in the eye of the beholder.

Of course it didn't. You've already shown that you have no interest in history, outside of what fits your worldview.
