Limitations on free speech are such a slippery slope that the writers of the constitution chose not to add qualifiers. I'm not saying that the government can't restrict speech under certain conditions. They already do and no doubt some would like to do at lot more. But this can become a real problem in a short period of time, because the definitions of violent speech, hate speech, misinformation, etc., change with whatever direction the political winds are blowing. Under the right conditions even silence can become violence.
In some future America, I could see any or all of the statements below being prosecuted and severely punished. But it doesn't even need to be heavily punished; a warning from three stormtroopers at your door has a chilling effect on speech
"I have a gun and plan to kill them"
"I'm going to kill them"
"I want to kill them"
"I have half a mind to kill them"
"I dreamed about killing them"
I've thought about killing them"
"I wish they would die"
"I'll celebrate when they die"
"Someone is going to kill them"
"Someone should kill them"
"The military should kill them"
"I wish the military would kill them"
"I wouldn't complain if someone killed them"
"The person who kills them has my respect"
"They don't deserve to live"
"We'll be better off if they're not around"
"They're a useless POS and shouldn't be wasting oxygen"
