I don't hate the russian soldiers, they don't want to be there anyway.
Don’t be a fricking moron and fight it a war that doesn’t concern you or your family. You’re being a selfish a-hole putting your family through unnecessary stress. Do you think the Ukrainians will love you to that people will really appreciate what you’re doing? No. You’re just a number like everyone else.

Agreed its very inspiring and sadly something i'm afraid we have lost along the way here in the USA. Only half of our population love our country and i'd say 25% would love to destroy it.
That said I'd doubt you could go there and cross into their country and be given a weapon to fight but I get the allure of it all.

Be smart about it. Don't go by yourself. Find a group that speaks English and has an evacuation plan. Fighting and helping doesn't mean you have to stay and die. The Russians will most likely be much more lenient to native Ukrainians than foreign mercenaries and freedom fighters.

I wouldn't be so negtive, there are still statues in part of Eastern Europe for Reagan, for British soldiers who died in Poland. Quite a few stayed and created a new beginning and some became very succesful in their new locale.
I would encourage him to do a physical fitness test and contact the Ukranian Embassy.
The Ukranian government has a website up and here is an overview published by the Miami Herald.
Please Note - if you want or expect to be paid then your way there can be paid for, you will get a salary and possibly even some kind of insurance but if you go alone you will have a lot freer hand to leave if your family has an emergency back here and you need to come back.
Another option is the French Foreign Legion but you will have to go through their training first.
