Assad was once the toast of Europe.

Now Assad has fled (?) to Moscow.
Make of it what you will.
quote:
In February, Vogue magazine published, for the benefit of its 11.7 million readers, an article titled "A Rose in the Desert" about the first lady of Syria. Asma al-Assad has British roots, wears designer fashion, worked for years in banking, and is married to the dictator Bashar al-Assad, whose regime has killed over 5,000 civilians and hundreds of children this year. The glowing article praised the Assads as a "wildly democratic" family-focused couple who vacation in Europe, foster Christianity, are at ease with American celebrities, made theirs the "safest country in the Middle East," and want to give Syria a "brand essence."

Syria currently has 4 warring factions:
Assad: controls 2/3 of the country as well as the vast majority of the population. Assad is backed by Iran and Russia.
Kurds: control about 1/4 of the country and are backed by the U.S. and opposed by Turkey and Iran.
Rebels: up until recently only controlled a small portion of the country around Idlib but recently broke out and retook Aleppo (Syria’s second largest city). They are backed by various Arab nations and Turkey.
Turkey: they are currently occupying a buffer zone in northern Syria and opposing the Kurds. The Turks fear that an independent Kurdistan operating in northern Syria or Iraq will embolden and supply Kurdish separatist terrorists in Eastern Anatolia.
So, what happened recently before the ceasefire broke was:
1. Turkish president Erdrogen, started negotiations with Kurdish leaders in Turkey. Erdrogen is currently term limited by the Turkish constitution and lacks an electoral majority to get his desired constitutional amendments ratified which would allow him to run again. He appeared to last week be negotiating a deal with the Kurdish minority in order to run for president again.
2. Hezbollah and Israel agreed to the framework of a ceasefire.
3. Russia’s currency collapsed in value.
4. Assad’s forces resumed shelling targets in Idlib in violation of the ceasefire.
The rebels responded by attacking Syrian positions, overrunning government forces, taking Aleppo, and are rapidly expanding.
My best guess as to what is happening is:
Erdrogen struck a deal with the Kurds essentially guaranteeing Syrian Kurdistan’s autonomy in exchange for his constitutional changes and an alliance with the rebels in Idlib, Hezbollah’s forces are too degraded from war with Israel to effectively support Assad, Iran and Russia are stretched too thin from the Israeli and Ukraine wars to effectively prop up Assad any more, the CIA is going full tilt supporting the Muslim rebels to reignite the conflict prior to Trump taking office. They seem to be escalating as many conflicts as possible to keep Trump from being able to unentangle foreign affairs.

I don't think we need to pick a side, let Russia fix Syria if it's so important to them

Great summary. The only thing in all of that is that I'm not sold that the deep state actors(CIA) is trying to make this worse before Trump takes office.

There was definitely gassing, very very likely by his forces (in spite of conspiracy theorists and Russian influence), and much of Syria hated Assad, and still do.

Syria…aka Assyria…where the followers of Christ were first called Christians (Antioch).
The ONLY semite nation-state (including Israel) where Christians are protected and allowed to practice their faith openly.
Why is Syria being targeted by Sunni terrorists? Is it because Syria is led by nominally Muslim Assad? Nope.
Is it because Assad brutally repressed Sunnis? Nope.
Is it because the God hating, neocons of the West (including Turkey) want to control Syria’s ports and destroy the only Russia friendly Arab nation in the Levant? Yep.

You mean like Trump did in his first term when he bombed them?
Twice?
I'm telling y'all, you "M'urca Fust" Hucster Carlson parrots are going to be heap big disappointed when Trump comes in and acts like he did his first term, before all of the silly isolationist rhetoric became so popular.

In an exclusive interview with the BBC's Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen, Mr Assad denied that his forces had dropped barrel bombs indiscriminately on rebel-held areas, killing thousands of civilians, and dismissed as propaganda a statement by the UN that his government often blocks access to besieged areas for relief organisations.
The Syrian leader also denied that there was a direct dialogue with the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State but confirmed that "general messages" were sometimes passed via third parties.

Every war we fight, the Christian community dies out.
We are the plague to middle eastern Christians. There used to be a million and a half Christians in Iraq in 2002. Now less than 200k.
It happens everywhere we go.

I haven’t seen a photo of him in Moscow. Did the Russians put out a press release talking about a visit?

This trend of attributing every single geo-political occurrence to the cia/deep-state is extremely tiresome.

Very much so.
These same people call all the government agencies too stupid to do everyday things, but somehow it’s believed we have this super great secret plans in the works all over the globe.

Syrian Christians prepare to celebrate Christmas in the city of Aleppo after liberation.
