Here, that ONE word, is why the USA ( gov't and private sector ) still currently kick the rest of the world's arse in all things space related.

unpredictably

That's not supposed to happen!!!

they say it went up at 21 metric tons and they expect 20-40% of it to survive re-entry

I saw a date of May 9th at 9PM at night yet they don't know where it will land. Others like it went in the ocean.

China doesn’t care. They will let rocket parts rain down on their own citizens and keep sending em up. (They have done this already)

Oh the irony if it were to crash into Three Gorges Dam.

So between 4.1--8.2 metric tons of wasted rocket will plummet down intact to Earth at an astronomical speed.

Who needs an asteroid when human ingenuity can alter climate through its own recklessness?

The U.S. will be ready and willing to offer 4 trillion in recovery aid in the event that were to happen.

Assuming terminal velocity in the atmosphere is 60 m/s, on the low end when this mass lands it should have 7.56 MJ of energy or 3.6 sticks of dynamite. On the high end, 7.2 sticks of dynamite.

If all that energy is concentrated in one area it could be bad. The more spread out the better and potentially less damage.

ETA: Terminal velocity depends on the shape of the object. 60 m/s is just a total guess and may be on the low end. The terminal velocity depends on cross sectional area of the object and can vary greatly.

Typical China. Do whatever they please with no consideration for the ramifications of their actions. Their country is the world’s #1 polluter, slaver, thief, and abuser of human rights. And nobody does anything about it. Who cares if a giant-arse rocket falls somewhere on earth? China doesn’t care, and neither will anyone else.

Think it would really be at terminal velocity when reaching Earth.

Would need the engineers to run the calculation but I’m guessing ~8 tons that might be around 330/mph.

Still pretty damn destructive speed...

Look up a few post. I just made the calculations. The terminal velocity is going to vary a lot so the energy calculation is just a guess. Nuts and bolts will have higher terminal velocities than pieces of sheet metal.

As long as US companies can make shitloads of money in China they would probably sponsor daily rockets crashing down to earth.

Shirley , you can’t be serious. Do you think a single stage of a rocket reentering will have any affect on the climate?

And yes, I will call you Shirley
