If they launch any type of ICBM or other type missile at the US, there is no way to tell if missile is loaded with conventional ordinance or a nuke.
US will launch its own in a “use them or lose them” strategy and it’s all over.
Plus, there is no credible missile defense system for either side at the moment. No system that can stop the magnitude of offensive missile launched anyway. We could perhaps destroy 2-3 missles from a rogue state on a lucky day.

1) how do we know they are conventional war heads inbound.?
2) if we have incoming ICBMs do we assume they are nukes?
Since we cannot confirm war heads and we have a nuke capable missile inbound we have to assume a first strike attack with nukes…..response would be like in kind….

Russia would find out rather quickly why the U.S. doesn’t have state-funded healthcare and would cease to exist as a functional society in a first strike scenario.

It’s not like we have sensors to determine whether ICBM’s heading toward you is conventional or nuclear. Both sides know that, and so they would never launch a conventional attack on us only to be met by a nuclear retaliation, and we would never respond with a conventional missile attack in kind, but rather assume it’s nuclear, especially when nuclear saber rattling beforehand causes you to immediately believe they were serious. It’s a ridiculous question in the first place. The first and last time Russia launches missiles at the US will be the first and last time Russia launches missiles at the US. It’s going to be nuclear.
