I agree completely with this. You run out of other peoples' money! All my comments are just to point out how good Mamdani is at campaigning.
Orwell was a Democratic Socialist at heart. But even he realized the folly of utopian fantasies.
Socialism can never work as a stand alone practice because you would literally have to create and force new money into the system on a constant basis.
It goes against all of human nature.

It’s still up to the legislature but the NYC mayor has lots of political clout.
As always, thank for the information Dukk.

Never forget forgot. I have no intention of paying any attention to the liars or the infidel that they elect.
They turned their backs on our dead and injured. I turn my back on them.
"IvoryBillMatt", you listen and report back... or not. I won't be reading.

It just seems odd that for somebody who's been around since at least Goldwater is acting like this is the second coming and like they've never seen anything like this before.
this is what I also find amusing
this dude is a muslim Edwin Edwards

That's irrelevant to my question.
You’ve had Dems come out and say it wasn’t the same Mamdani they’ve interviewed and spoke with.
No need, he’s won and you’ll see the real man now and it’s exactly what we already know.

No thanks. He's a piece of garbage and anyone who thinks it's good for him to have been elected is a moron.

Just the opposite. I saw a communist who is a really candidate. I worry that his is a good model for other communists.
FWIW, I initially blew this Mamdani off as no big deal.

I feel like this is one of those situations like when Trump came on the scene where the media would act like they couldn't understand his support, but when you actually listened to him, what he said was completely different from what the media portrayed. I don't think he is a threat nationally, but another version of him might be. A young Bernie was going to rise up at some point.
I agree.
And I think he is not a threat nationally because he is an Executive, he has to govern and take responsibility and deliver on his promises. Remember, Obama could promise the world in flowery meaningless language because he was a state Senator and U.S. Senator - not an Executive.
But someone like AOC is going to adopt Mandami's style, language, etc. and that person could be a real threat.

quote:You think even more centralized government control, i.e , socialism, is going to reduce debt? You are aware our economy is not strictly capitalistic at this point, but far more of a "state capitalism" form of economy. It is a required prerequisite to full blown socialism, which is another reason why it's failing. You yearn for something we're already dabbling in, and it's a primary reason why we're in 40 trillion dollars' worth of debt.
I’d rather try and fail at a new approach than continue with this approach that’s clearly failing America and has been for generations. $40 trillion in debt and what do we have to show for it? We’ve been robbed blind and the poor will be made to suffer the consequences.
This is why we must have voter reform in this country. You should have to pass a basic civics test akin to legal immigrants but tailored to voting, in order to vote. You should also have to pay taxes. Right now only 50% of us are doing so.
You gravely misunderstand the most basic, elementary laws of economics, and that you can vote on it is terrifying. The economy is is not a machine that you can control in any measured way for any reasonable amount of time. The reason why is because the economy is all about human actions and behavior. That can't be controlled. You can't control human emotions, actions and behavior, therefore you can't centrally control their economy. To believe, like you do, that some do-nothing socialist politician can be the first one in recorded history to do so is absurd.
You are not entitled to the sweat of my brow and the food on my family's table because you're a non-starter, failure to launch and you want some of it. That's called slavery. That's called socialism.

I listened to Bidens speech in 2020 with ALL of the focus on unity. That didn't work out so well for me.

NYC has been headed towards the likes of Detroit for a while now but electing a muslim commie has stepped it up to getting there at warp speed!

will all of the entertainers and media move out of New York City now?

don’t know of many billionaires backing the likes of Bernie Sanders, AOC, or Mamdani. I do however know the tech feudal lords and other billionaires backing the mainstream politicians, particularly this current administration. It’s about putting people in political office not beholden to billionaires and who will put the needs of the working people first. The rich don’t need anymore tax breaks or special considerations. They already own everything are poised to eliminate the majority of labor via AI and robotics. I want a bulwark in place to defend working people from the devastation brought on to them by decades of offshoring, horrific trade deals that prioritized corporate interests over working people, skyrocketing costs in housing, education, healthcare, groceries, etc. all while the wealthy make out like bandits, making astronomically large profits while every day people can barely make their mortgage, if they’re lucky to even have one. We watched our parent’s generations suffer through this and were not gonna sit idly by to see our fall victim to it as well. If they weren’t so willing to shake every nickel and dime out of our pockets to line their own, we wouldn’t be considering such policies. But here we are, and it’s time to fight fire with fire. Sorry, not sorry.
So yes, you want to grant the government even more power for the elites to bludgeon us with. Thanks for nothing a-hole.

Some quotes of substance from the speech.
For how long is rent frozen?
What’s the second order effects of this?
What is the loss in revenue from free buses to the Metropolitan Transit Authority? What makes up the shortfall?
What’s the cost of universal child care?
With a projected budget deficit of $3.6B for 2026 before any of these are enacted, how fricking stupid are New Yorkers?
(Future projected budget deficits at current conditions beyond 2026 are $7.8 billion, $10.1 billion, and $9.6 billion per year.)

An agenda that will freeze the rents for more than two million rent stabilized tenants, make buses fast and free and deliver universal child care across our city.
