There is no need to shoot at people who are not interfering with your rights.

I guess this is where we differ. I don't think they had the right to own people.

They did, and apparently you do.

Well, I was referencing the right to secede, but slavery WAS legal at the time.

Our 21st-Century approval or disapproval of the “peculiar institution” has no bearing upon the matter, and the North did not invade the South to end slavery.

Sure it does. We're deciding now whether or not to celebrate them.

They are not veterans of the United States.

Why do you want to celebrate the enemy of the United States?

I would say “You cannot actually be this stupid,” but I can see otherwise.

The North invaded the South to end an insurrection. If they had quickly prevailed, slavery in the South would have been unaffected.

I keep telling you. The purpose of the monuments was not so much about honoring Confrderate dead, as it was a white reaction to Reconstruction.

Wait, are you saying that monuments of confederate leaders who killed american soldiers for their right to own slaves, built during Jim Crow are meant to be... racist!?!?!?!

Yet another example of avoiding my point by selective redaction. My POINT was that the institution WAS legal at the time. You cannot refute that simple, objective fact, so you try to change the question.

If you want to judge 19th Century people and their actions using 21st Century mores, have at it. Maybe you should judge the Romans or the Moses-era Jews by the same standard.

Most educated people are smarter than that.

I'd advocate for their monuments to be taken down too.

Fortunately, there aren't very many of those in the United States at the moment.

Pick any numbers you want. I have always said that a tax on the stupid is positively Darwinian.

Oh the nerve of me. lol

The monuments were definitely a statement about Southern whites resisting change.
I think I already suggested that people research the written dadications for many of these monuments.

It doesn't even take that much effort. Just look at the dates they were erected.

There is a significant difference between “predicting the future” and extrapolating alternate outcomes from known historical events, based upon all available contemoraneous data.

Yes, I know, over your head.
