Exactly correct, they will use propaganda to change public sentiment where those possessing banned firearms will be viewed the same as drug dealers. There will be plenty of people willing to turn you in, even if you don’t go to prison you will lose your job. Home etc.

they don't need to take anything. it's a culture war, pure and simple. they will continue to demonize guns and in 2 generations there won't be enough people who understand their purpose or who know how to effectively use them to make any difference.

That is it. Draconian punishments and media coverage of trials to show people's lives destroyed. A couple dozen of these followed by an amnesty turn-in period will take in a whole bunch of guns.

I've heard several talking heads, both left and right, discussing it in the last year. The UN security forces have been mentioned by everyone as the force to lead the attempt. Just as you said, if it's left to our own Police, or Military, they fear too many individuals in those ranks would not comply with the order.
