The House on Dec. 6 passed the Crucial Communism Teaching Act with a vote of 327–62. The bill, introduced by Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.) and cosponsored by 33 members of the House, seeks to address a gap in the education system related to the history of communism.
“Communism is one of the most destructive political ideologies the world has ever seen,” Rep. Salazar said when reintroducing the bill earlier this year.
“The Crucial Communism Teaching Act is important because our youth must remember the crimes of the communists, including those inflicted upon my constituents and their families in Florida’s 27th district.”
The legislation mandates that the new educational program will discuss “certain political ideologies, including communism and totalitarianism, that conflict with the principles of freedom and democracy that are essential to the founding of the United States.”
It also makes space for an oral historical series called “Portraits in Patriotism,” which will feature stories from survivors of communist regimes. The bill’s authors said they wanted the survivors to describe the contrast between life under those political systems and life in the United States.
During a floor debate ahead of its passage, Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.) said the bill was “narrowly tailored” and did not address more important issues such as “achievement gaps” and affordable education.
What the heck do 'achievement gaps' have to do with communism?!?! Or affordable education, for that matter?!?! Education is FREE in the US, idiot! I'm going to find out who the other commies are who voted against this.

Mandating things be taught in school simply to virtue signal is what everyone hates about the government being involved in education.

I also hate virtue signaling, however I certainly wouldn’t classify this as virtue signaling.

It is only virtue signaling when the other guys do it.

They used to teach a Communism class in high school decades ago. My Pops had to take it and always claimed it was the best grade he ever made.

So should the curriculum be whatever the frick each teacher wants? Is it wrong to require (mandate) certain things be taught?
A healthy society defines what should be taught to the children of that society and requires (mandates) that it be taught.
frick off commie.

Use "The Black Book of Communism" as the foundation to the class. It should be mandatory to graduate HS and college.

I approve of this but hope that it becomes moot by the time Trump finishes his turn and, hopefully, abolishes the DOE altogether. Send education to the states. Lib sates want to teach there kids that boys ar girls and such so be it. Then their kids will be cleaning the toilets of kids in states that put focus on real education when they become adults.

Will remedial classes be available?

quote:It's not virtue signaling at all. Kids need to be taught about this fundamentally flawed and oppressive ideology. They need to know why it fails and why they should reject it when someone tries to sell it to them.

Civics class and a home budget class should be taught in every high school.

Achievement gaps seems like it is tied to communism. So he's arguing a bill against communism essentially asking for more communism.

It was a mandatory course in many private schools. The public schools had civics and an election named 'govt.'
All schools should teach a one semester HS course covering basic govt duties, civics and communism vs. capitalism. You're not going into college level detail so it's not necessary to have 3 separate classes.

They need to go in the opposite direction and return to teaching about America and it's principles, along with a strong, based teaching of Civics and Constitutional rights.

Years ago I had a group of students trying to extol the virtues of socialism to me (a science teacher) so I did a little experiment. On their next quiz everyone received what was the equivalent of one point above passing (basically a D minus).
The smart kids (the wannabe Chairman Mao with the Che Guevara t shirts) were outraged. “How did I get a D when I got all the questions right?”
Welcome to socialism— everyone gets the same. 2 of them that I keep in touch with are major MAGA engineers.
