But factually, the kid looks to be in pretty damned good shape on the self-defense AD.
I don't see any point at which he COULD have retreated but did not attempt to do so before firing. In the first confrontation, it looks like (soon to be) dead guy had him corralled between two vehicles. In the second confrontation, the poor kid WAS retreating and just fell down. He did not fire until AFTER at least two people had physically assaulted him (kung-fu kick guy and skateboard guy, at a minimum). Arguable, EMT hat guy committed an assault as well.
