Health care costs

I had a conversation with my son about the cost of healthcare. He's 21 and knew it was expensive, but didn't know how much it cost. We picked up a $200 prescription, and he was shocked. So I sat down with him and went over the costs for our family of 5, using bronze level ACA coverage costs:
Premiums: $20,500/year (about $1700/mo)
Deductible: $13,000/yr
Out-of-pocket Max $17,000/yr
So basically, the first $33,500 is out of pocket. After that, I pay %20 in network and a co-pay for prescriptions until I reach the $37,500 out of pocket, at which time the plan covers everything.
My son thinks healthcare is a scam, after seeing the numbers.
Is healthcare getting better, given how much we spend? No. We're doing healthcare by flow chart. Doctors are asking pre-programmed questions and the prescribing drugs - it's about treating symptoms and not wellness. We are getting teledocs and nurse practitioners. We spend less time with the doctors as care is more about getting patients in and out than spending personal time with them. Treatment protocols are influenced by insurance companies - what's covered and what's not.
All of the corner cutting and efficiency measures I mentioned should be driving costs down, but they continue to go up. What can we do?

Your son is completely correct. The entire system is a SCAM.
Really is well beyond a SCAM and thank CORRUPT CONgress AGAIN.
Pharma and insurance companies are making records profits and have paid billions in bribes to CONgress.
Capitalism for profits and Socialism for Losses.

This is part of the problem.
Self-employment has become almost a prohibitively inefficient way to live your life.

Yeah just got a $340 bill from March for a penicillin shot. On top of my $50 co pay. Pay 1300/month for family. Feels fricking awesome

I went 4 years without insurance. Wife (no pics) and I are self employed. We paid cash for a few surgeries. BTW,,you can negotiate with the doctors if you offer cash. Saved over $90k vs Obamadencratcare...Also, I never paid the Obamahahlah penalties. As long as you owed the IRS payments on your 1040, they can never collect. Stupid shite is for congress to read the bill after it is passed. So far so good.

Modern "insurance" is nothing of the sort. You're just paying for it over time.

Dumbest response.
Someone is still laying for it.
Totally agree with the OP. Healthcare is a joke these days. Over 50% of the doctor couldn’t care less. They just go through the motions and rely on the lower level health care workers to administer their orders. Which are inconclusive more often than not.
It’s a sad state of affairs.

Did you tell him all of that extra money goes to pay for someone who is sick or someone who cant or wont pay at all?

The worst part of owning / small business partnership is health insurance
I went from a 0 cost 200 deductible to 440 a month to 6500 deductive that had to be purchased through the healthcare marketplace
Last year it went up to 495 a month
When I tried to cancel through healthcare.gov they show I don’t have insurance & if I did I shouldn’t be paying 495 but 470 a month
They have opened a ticket & it should be resolved within 30 days
How can anyone have faith in the govt doing anything right after using healthcare.gov & seeing how inept USPS is?

It’s a scam... just use it as a lesson to teach your son to eat healthy and take care of his body... obviously won’t solve every issue, but it’s a great start.

I’m a Conservative, but healthcare is so out of whack it doesn’t bother me if government takes it over. They already control over 50% of it, and over 70% of the hospital business. Either they need to take over all of it, or give it to the insurance companies and require them to cover everybody equally. There are true freeloaders out there, but also hardworking people who are being bankrupted by high deductibles or employers who don’t provide insurance. And you are right about small businesses having trouble. The current system is broken badly.

Screw that. I’d just pay the $1,500-3,000 a year to a top notch family doctor for concierge services and cash for visits instead of insurance companies.

At a minimum, make healthcare and health insurance nonprofit. Ideally, single payer or medicare for all. No one should go bankrupt because they get sick.

This is exactly wrong and is what they want. They can totally control you if they control your health.
If it was a total free market like other things you buy and price would go straight down. Health car providers, drug makers and insurance companies would have to compete based on quality and price. Why are they protected now?
