99.999% of prisoners in Angola, if honest with themselves, can look back to a decision or decisions, that they made, that put them on the path to prison.

It is not my moral responsibility for their actions...Past, present or future.

This can be said for basically all of humanity. We can all reflect on our lives and see where we went wrong at various moments. The ability to self-reflect is not evidence of psychopathy. If anything, it demonstrates self-awareness and the opposite of distorted, criminal thinking. People screw up. Some people get caught.

Forcing someone to farm in temperatures over 90 degrees doesn’t actually make anyone a better person or rehab anyone. If anything, it just increases rage and encourages criminal thinking and behavior.

I don’t think anyone claimed it is.

Everyone who gets arrested should be forced to farm in 90 degree+ weather? Is that your position?

Everyone who gets arrested goes to jail.

You make a gross assumption that everyone in prison is guilty. But maybe you believe Trump committed 34 felonies too. How pitiful.

Specifically, the prison needed to provide sufficient shade, rest, and equipment for the incarcerated men who are forced to work Angola’s Farm Line for pennies an hour.

Are we sure the prisoners are actually forced to go on these work details? I may be wrong, but I recall judges making Louisiana correctional institutions stop forcing inmates to work back in the ‘70s. It’s my understanding that ‘work’ was/is voluntary.

My dad was the Superintendent at a LTI facility and also worked at Angola for a time(he hated Angola). He was always talking about the court orders regarding prison reform.

This seems like a good thread to incorporate a quote from the Elon/Christianity thread… liberals are so easy to diagnose.

quote:

As they talked more, Musk returned to his ideal of empathy, suggesting liberals have misplaced feelings when it comes to dealing firmly with criminals—what he called “shallow empathy.” “There’s a lack of empathy for the victims of the criminals and too much empathy for the criminals,” Musk said. “That’s why you want to have deep empathy for society as a whole, not shallow empathy for criminals.”

No one has suggested setting the criminals free or even making them stop working. Just measures to keep them adequately safe. You would probably get inreased productivity out of them then.

Contrary to what the government history textbooks tell you, slaves were treated quite well by their owners. There was no rampant beatings, lynchings, etc. Slaves were not cheap. You wouldn't damage something you paid a lot of money for. And they needed them to earn revenue. You wouldn't mistreat them because your livelihood depended on them being productive. A slave with broken bones or other ailments isn't going to be productive. Just like a modern day farmer wouldn't intentionally damage their combine harvester. It would only be to their detriment.

Angola taking care of these laborers would be to their greater benefit.

People who aren’t arrested farm in 90+ degree weather.

When they did something far enough to end up in Angola they forfeited their right to make the choice whether or not to farm in 90 degree weather.

Sounds like a pretty good deterrent to crime to me.

Why? Is that where all convicted felons belong?

A lot of them belong in a box 6 feet underground, not still wasting oxygen.
