My wife used to teach English at the High School level and would always tell me about running into her kids occasionally while out shopping or doing things around town… the encounters were always lol. Now this has been 15-20 years ago, cause she’s now mostly administrative, but back then, the kids were like shocked…. They acted like they ran into a movie star. They didn’t seemed to grasp that their teachers were real people, that they did normal things like shop for food. I feel that’s because their were lines you didn’t cross in the classroom, about private lives and just teaching kids what they were there for…..and respect that parents gave to teachers to build their importance… that seems to have dissipated..

I had one or two in junior high who taught science or history, but that was it. It would be considered weird if a man was teaching any grade below 5th when I was growing up. Especially a gay man. And this was like 20 years ago.
