I was surprised to see Denmark and Greenland lie about that. I can't wait to see the looks on their faces when the Danish Parliament approves the transfer of Greenland to the US.
I can't WAIT to see that beautiful final agreement with President Trump's signature on it. Finally!
I'm just so proud of the work of the US Envoy to Greenland in making this happen! It was nip and tuck there for a while, it really looked like Denmark would be the first NATO country to allow Chinese, Russian, and Iranian military bases. Phew!

The United States has had extensive defense rights in Greenland since the 1951 U.S.-Denmark defense agreement and has operated military installations there for decades. This is essentially like renewing a lease agreement. Not first man on the moon historic.
The exclusivity extends to NATO, not just the US - who Trump claims is irrelevant but was really essential in making this deal.
Trump was claiming earlier this year about getting exclusive rights to Greenland's vast mineral deposits, but that is not part of the deal. China is still in negotiations on that front.
He is desperate for a win with so much losing going on.

Duration: The 1951 deal lasted only as long as NATO existed and Greenland remained part of NATO. Trump’s 2026 deal lasts indefinitely, even if NATO implodes or Greenland becomes independent.
New Military Bases: In the 1951 deal, the U.S. could establish “defense areas” in Greenland only if Denmark gave the go-ahead. In Trump’s 2026 deal, the U.S. can establish military installations as it sees fit, with or without Denmark’s approval.
Third Countries: In the 1951 deal, Denmark retained the right to allow foreign nations, like China, to establish a presence in Greenland. Trump’s 2026 deal explicitly forbids foreign nations from doing anything in Greenland without U.S. approval.
