Greenland Deal: not done

The deal has to be ratified by the Danish Parliament (simple majority vote). After all the insults, Danish politicians aren't inclined to approve anything that benefits the US too much.
From our side, if the deal is just considered a modification of the current, permanent 1951 agreement, then the President has the authority to sign on his own.
If the deal fundamentally changes things, it will be considered a treaty. It would have to be ratified by 2/3rds of the US Senate.
So, the President, legally, is going to claim that this is just a modification to the 1951 agreement. There are downsides to practicing diplomacy through Truth Social declarations.

It seems like a great deal for the US. I hope it as described by President Trump. I hope that it gets ratified.
One of the drawbacks to these premature celebrations through social media is that you trigger political backlash in the other country...which craters the deal...see Canada-US deal.
Also, frick you. President Trump is the best president of my lifetime. One of the reasons is that he is a problem solver. As part of his unique qualifications, Trump is not used to having to "get permission." In this case, he's dealing with a sovereign, democratic country...with its own political considerations.
The Danes were PISSED at the insults that they weren't good allies to the US. Per capita, the Danes had more soldiers KIA in Afghanistan than any NATO ally.

In terms of diplomacy, though, I wish he had advisors he would listen to. "Maybe chill on the victory lap, Sir, before we get ratification from the Danish Parliament. Your approval ratings in Denmark aren't that great."

For us, I was just going off of what I learned in law school. FWIW, Courts bend over backwards to find international agreements to be within executive power. If the Trump Administration acknowledges that this is just a modification of the 1951 agreement, that will probably be enough to avoid the need for Senate ratification.
Trump posted about this late on Friday. Not surprised there isn't much reporting on this issue yet. Plus, the actual agreement hasn't been made public.

The genuflecting at this being as big as the Louisiana Purchase is hilarious.
Until the actual terms of the deal are revealed NO ONE knows what we got, what we gave up, or what we will pay.
I tend to ALWAYS be suspect of any report that says “no cost to the taxpayer “. Maybe Lucy won’t pull the football this time Charlie Brown, but I doubt it.
Coupled with the fact that the statements between the Danish PM and Trump are not congruent at all, I am in a Missouri state of mind.
