Assets are only worth something if people think they’re valuable. When priorities change, values can change.

I wonder where the value went if it left gold.

Prices go up and down every day. Gold is a commodity and store of value like any other asset, and it is just as prone to ups and downs as every other asset. Gold is often invested in because it’s more stable than treasuries, stocks, or real estate, not necessarily that it is going to increase in value more. However, all stability is relative, and all investments are gambles.

The price is likely dropping due to the federal reserve raising rates.

It's up 138.19% over the past 5 years.

You're an idiot.

This move probably doesn't have anything to do with the good inflation numbers announced this morning.

you are correct. as long as interest rates are rising, gold will drop. if rates keep going up, the stock market will drop too.

Gold is a good long term hedge against inflation. You are taking gold from its all time peak and looking at a drop during a short time of rising interest rates to come up with a false narrative.

Gold should not be all of your portfolio, but around 5% is not a bad position. I believe JP Morgan had recommended as much as 20% because they were cooling on bonds.

I would think guns, ammo, and food would have a far greater value.

If you had a place off grid that is stocked and the SHTF, a year later here is what is being offered to you for trading them 100 pounds dried and canned food.

(A)-1 AR15 and 2000 rounds of ammo (you have 2, but there are 4 adults living with you)
(B)-50 64 oz canning jars with lids 20# bees wax, and 2500 rounds of 22lr (you currently have 50 jars you are reusing, no bees wax and 5000 rounds of 22)
(C)-500w solar panel set up with 30 led bulbs 2 rechargeable flashlights (you have 400w now and 1 rechargeable flashlight)
(D)-Working 40 gallon still with 20, 1 gallon glass jugs. (you don’t have anything like that)
(E)-2 pounds of gold bars.

What would be your order of trade acceptance.

Me,
A,D,B,C,E

2 years ago it was $2,000. Today it is $4,000. What's your point other than you have the memory recall of a dog?

Sure, Jan ….

Never mind that Central Banks, BRICs, and governments around the world are adding bullion to their Reserves as fast as has ever been recoded in history.

The debasement trade is alive and well …..

and now it's down 20% in one year, gold is seen as a hedge against inflation due to the stability of it's price. by definition a volatile asset can't be a hedge against inflation. plus when you buy physical gold you pay between 2.5-5% commission so when grammy bought her gold at $ 5000 an oz. last april her actual cost $5250.00 an oz so she's down $1000 an oz.

Yes, but assuming Grammy bought USA minted bullion, she will owe zero federal cap gains upon liquidation. Same goes for silver eagles.

Missouri just passed laws against government seizure and assured zero state capital gains too.

Grammy might just be smarter than you want to give her credit for.
You a Gen-Xr ?
