Likely, but I have zero feel for how this is going in the western parts of Germany. The states where the AFD have recently performed well were formerly in East Germany. The west turns up their nose at places like this; this is their deep south/flyover country equivalent in the minds of elites.
Even if the AFD does better in the west (which they may very well do), you will have the equivalent of dogs and cats living together to freeze them out of power. Former adversarial parties will form a government to keep them out of power. Other EU states will likely do everything they can to ensure it doesn't happen.
AFD has an uphill battle. It really will take complete fatigue of the overall electorate for them to take power. That is separate from their policy/ actions that may have worldwide defense and trade implications.

He still has a coalition government that supports him. State level elections in smaller eastern states are not going to topple the national government.

That 5% requirement to get any representation helps them out a lot.
38% isn’t a majority but when about 6 other parties come in just below 5% it slides you a LOT closer to having 50% of the seats actually handed out.

I don't see a problem. Europe would be better off changing their approach to Russia, stop agitating Russia and open up trade. They'd have much better results.....

Europe seems to hate a long love/hate relationship with Russia.
Over history there have been times of cooperation and then animosity.

Let us all take a moment to mock and jeer at the most disgraced leader in German history. Point to your screen, and enjoy a hearty laugh at the pinched and prune-like aspect of the abject nincompoop.
The ex-BlackRock banker and Trilateral Commission stooge has the lowest approval rating of any leader in German history. The reviled abomination who has brought his country to the brink of ruin has now announced his refusal to do the honorable thing and resign, instead choosing to continue his wretched scut work of wringing out the German taxpayer for his globalist paymasters just a little while longer.

He is unpopular for all the right reasons: he is cutting pensions, cutting healthcare, tightening out-of-work benefits, breaking the "firewall" by cooperating with the AfD on migration, etc. Germany is not going to get a Chancellor as good as Merz on substantive issues. But, yeah, he doesn't play the rhetoric game all that well.
