Georgia GOP rejects redistricting that would add 2 seats

Georgia’s Republican legislative leaders on Wednesday rejected Gov. Brian Kemp’s call to redraw congressional and legislative districts during a special session, citing concerns about moving too quickly after a U.S. Supreme Court decision weakened federal Voting Rights Act protections for minority voters.
The decision marked a setback for both Kemp and President Donald Trump, who has urged Republican-led states to redraw congressional districts to their advantage. Ten states already have enacted new congressional districts ahead of the November midterm elections. Georgia would have been the first to change districts for the 2028 elections.

Fear that it might energize Democrats come the November election for governor.

They’re either not really Republicans or they can’t stand success. No other explanations.
The SCOTUS gave them legal access to a big win, and they have a POTUS direction to use it, and they won’t take the win.

They are essentially consenting to an illegitimate and unconstitutional election and legislative apportionment because "we'd prefer to have a little more time".

Just the latest disappointment from that state.

The U.S. Supreme Court decision obviously proves that the federal Voting Rights Act isn't protection for minority voters.

I don't like the decision either.
To make the counterargument - GA has shown itself to be an odd duck lately. We don't like politicians dictating candidates inorganically (Herschel, Vernon Jones, Dooley, etc.). "We" don't like Trump throwing his weight around on internal state matters. It's a purple-ish state at minimum.
Those things are true. Being sensitive to those things and the GA "middle" in that regard makes sense from a conventional wisdom perspective more so than in most other states. The GA GOP thinks they're on shaky ground and they're mostly right.
That said, while a reasonable thought process, I disagree with the decision because it's the type of "operating from fear and practicality" stance that has seen the GOP get its lunch eaten most of the time. It's worked well for Kemp in this state, but even Kemp doesn't like this move.

The entire George economy is driven by illegal immigration. They have no desire to change anything.

Kemp is leaving office and I don't know how this would affect the governor election.

The Democrat nominee isn't a.super popular figure (she was so bad as mayor of Atlanta she didn't run for a second term. Republicans are hoping that will keep Democrat turnout in November down, both for the governor's race and US Senate seat. Even then both races will be decided by 2-4 points. If the state Congressional map were changed there's a good possibility it would drive up Democrat turnout in November and potentially be enough to swing both races.

Lol yeah right. The Georgia GOP has been feckless for decades and has two Democrat senators. This is what they do, surrender
