And no offense to your service but regime change has never happened with only an aerial campaign. Well except for that one time.

Regime change hasn’t happened with 20 years of boots on the ground either. The Taliban controlled Afghanistan when we went in and they control it today.

Another war that the General fervently supported.

They’re going to lie and delay and that’s their goal. I think they’re strategy is to reopen the strait knowing we don’t have the stomach to go back in when

That would piss Trump off and they would find out how wrong they are

The problem is that Iran doesn't own the strait...

You can debate "own" but Iran has 4 sovereign islands in the Strait that the shipping channel passes through. And every one of these islands has military site on it with airstrip. So they kinda do own the shipping channel waters

These islands are barely a couple square miles each but it is enough. I thought when ground troops moved over there that we were going to sieze these islands.

Been a lot of 180s here the past month or so.

And they’re picking up in speed.

How do you finish the job without either burning the entire country to the ground and being accused of war crimes or a full scale invasion and we learned in Afghanistan, Syria, and Oraq to an extent that they just wait is out and bleed us dry

Not to mention the economic damage this was about to cause worldwide.

Trump doesn’t want to be impeached for war crimes or not be able to travel for fear of some crazy European country trying to arrest him.

Sure, finishing the job usually sounds like the right choice. But what does that mean? Did the general say? There’s not going to be regime change away from the radical muzzies, so take that off the table. Degrading their ability to make war and keeping them in check is about all that is achievable. The hammer we need to hold over them is their oil industry. They’re toast without it.

Trump was looking for an off ramp, and the Iranians gave him one. I don't think there was ever any intention of forcibly reopening the Strait of Hormuz or putting Marines feet dry anywhere in Iran. Air Power is easy, for the most part sterile, with the occasional hiccup, but is a panacea to the uninitiated, it's flashy and loud, makes for great PR blurbs, but in reality it never accomplishes anything without the corresponding boots on the ground. We'll see if the religious Zealots in Iran have the intestinal fortitude not to do something f'ing stupid.

Iran is saying that they will only agree to the 10 point deal that they put forward. Inside that deal it calls for the United States to pay them damages and war reparations. Trump said in a truth social post that this 10 point plan is workable. I couldn’t think of anything more insulting and repugnant as agreeing to this deal and giving Iran 1 cent of American taxpayer money after they are responsible for the death and serious injury to so many American servicemen over the decades. The very suggestion of it makes me violently ill. If Trump agrees to anything like that it will be the greatest betrayal of the American people in the history of our country.

All of which should lead one to consider a critical all important question:

If you can’t finish the job…

why start it?

I don’t disagree. Iran lies and none of this regime should be in place. I think Trump was looking for an off-ramp and this just gave it to him. Horrible outcome of this ends up being the case. Didn’t want war, understand the reasoning, and then expected to finish this regime with the Iranian people finishing this off. I’m highly disappointed but will see how this finishes out.

Why not? We’ve been successful decapitating whatever head figure pops up and the next dozen guys.

Keep doing it and increase psychological campaigns and create propaganda to get the IRGC to quit or flip.

Their influence will diminish. might take months, but it could probably be done.

I think oil prices won the day tho.
