Gaetz: Passing debt deal without Republican majority would ‘likely trigger an immediate motion’ to oust McCarthy

quote:

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) said on Tuesday that passing a debt deal without a Republican majority in the House would trigger an “immediate” motion to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

“If a majority of Republicans are against a piece of legislation and you use Democrats to pass it, that would immediately be a black letter violation of the deal we had with McCarthy to allow his ascent to the Speakership, and it would likely trigger an immediate motion to vacate,” Gaetz told Newsmax.

“I think Speaker McCarthy knows that,” he added. “That’s why he’s working hard to make sure that he gets, you know, 120, 150, 160 votes. And that’s why those of us who are not supportive of the bill are trying to point out that many of the changes are cosmetic in nature.”

Does the GOP get it passed w/o the 25 holdouts? Does KM keep his post?

Gaetz is one of at least 25 House Republicans — out of 222 members of the Republican conference — who have said they will not vote for the deal struck by McCarthy and President Biden to raise the debt ceiling.

I haven’t seen the list, but I guess it’s safe to assume this list of 25 correlates positively with the list of McCarthy’s 20 GOP detractors back in January?

Rep. Dan Bishop (N.C.)
Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.)

I would say this ^^^^ demonstrates Gaetz has his own principles and voting for legislation that simply delays the financial collapse of the US is not something Gaetz wants any part of.

Yes. Enough democrats would cross over to nullify the 20. KM is someone they feel they can play with.

To an extent I agree but he’s treading in dangerous waters with the holdouts by doing so.

Gaetz is a con-man like Trump. He is just as interested in getting reelected as the most of the DC Swamp.

WHo does he think will replace him? He is a DA.

To an extent, yes. Nearly everyone who makes it to DC instantly makes staying in DC the priority.

Gaetz’s flaw is that he thinks fighting back is by definition fighting back like Trump or MTG. We need those people; we need people who will ask questions nobody else will ask and make accusations nobody else will make even though the entire nation knows they’re true.

What they miss is that they can fight back without becoming a caricature. Gaetz would be more effective, and gain credibility with the squishy middle, if he would say the same things but in a different way. He’s following the Trump formula too closely.

Agree ... better said than my post. I'm a supporter of the Freedom Caucus for the most part. But, they need to understand winning.

They brag about "cutting $2trillion in spending, yet the debt ceiling climbs higher. Gee, wonder why.

Also, McSwampy promised the House that if he became SotH, the one thing he would absolutely not let pass was the 80,000 new IRS agents... And, guess what? The money intended to hire those agents still remains in the bill, unallocated, with only a 2% reduction to the sought total. Surely the fraudulently installed Brandon administration won't just go ahead and hire those 80,000 agents anyway with all that money just laying around for the taking... Right?

Some of us said all along that McSwampy was nothing but a fraud who would cave when it mattered most.

But don't worry, he's about to hold Wray in contempt of Congress! And it gets better... When he does that, who does he refer Wray to? Merrick fricking Garland.

You can't help but laugh. Anyone who can't see this scripted shite for exactly what it is at this point, is just stupid.

Wrong. I’m in Gaetz’ district. He won last time with around 78% of the vote. He’s in no danger come reelection. He’s doing exactly what we want…fighting the Uniparty.

You dumb leftist NPCs. While I realize your world view is very "This GOOD....That BAAAADDD" depending on whatever Rachel Maddow tells you to think in a given week, some people are actually capable of free thought and nuance.

I realize you won't understand this. The entire concept is foreign to you.
