Sounds like the military rose up in the face of election fraud.

Congratulations to the courageous military officers of Gabon for bringing to an end this travesty of democracy. I pray other African nations follow. It is time to put an end to French neocolonialism in Africa.

Their president's name is Ali Bongo. Can you get more African than that?

Ali Bongo Ondimba, sometimes known as Ali Bongo, is a Gabonese politician who is the third and current president of Gabon since October 2009. He is a member of the Gabonese Democratic Party. Ali Bongo is the son of Omar Bongo, who was president of Gabon from 1967 until his death in 2009.

That family has been in charge since the 60s.

And looks like he got back in just like his fellow democrats in the US.

quote:

He was reelected in 2016, in elections marred by numerous irregularities, arrests, human rights violations, and post-election protests and violence.

Is that the country where the leader had a million dollars hidden in his sofa cushions?

Gabon has one of the top standards of living and GDP per capita, etc. in sub-Saharan Africa.

They weren't doing everything wrong.

Dang

Makes you wonder if they have something similar to 30A/Santa Rosa. Bet it’s nice around April-May.

Not a democracy, threat to democracy, etc.. etc...

quote:

Despite an abundance of natural wealth, poor fiscal management and over-reliance on oil has stifled the economy. Power cuts and water shortages are frequent.

quote:

Average income per capita is one of Africa's highest, but oil wealth is held by only a few; most Gabonese live in poverty.

quote:

Disparities in social inclusion in Gabon

In 2015, the Gabon national poverty rate was nearly 38.5 per cent — more than a third of the population; with 45 per cent in rural areas and 30 per cent in urban areas.

I dont think you are a bad poster but you sure are wrong a lot.

quote:

As a group of senior Gabonese military officers announce they have seized power and placed President Ali Bongo under house arrest, we take a closer look at Gabon's economic situation. The Central African nation is the fourth-largest oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa, but a third of its population lives below the poverty line. One particular source of frustration lies in the high levels of corruption: the country ranks 136th in Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index.

“One of africa’s largest oil producers”

Sounds like Gabon needs some democracy!

Absolutely nothing in my post was wrong. I said this, which is factually correct:

quote:

Gabon has one of the top standards of living and GDP per capita, etc. in sub-Saharan Africa.

Obviously not a high bar, but they are better off than most of the other nations in the region. I didn’t say they were rich

The West and its client "democracies" are slowly getting booted out of Africa. It's actually a pretty big deal.

I seentit. One of the nicer places in W. Africa. Definately safer than Oakland. Well, at least it was 25 years ago. Sounds like a lot has changed.
