I think it's because of all of the inheritance money he has had over the years. I wouldn't say that he's a failed businessmen but compared to self made billionaires and even people of far less net worth his returns on his inheritance alone aren't terribly impressive. If he would have just put all of his inheritance money in an index fund he would probably have a higher net worth than what he does now.
