Who was his letter addressed to?

The whole separation of church and state argument has always been misinterpreted to me. The United States does not have an officially recognized religion. We are not Turkey. We were not founded as a secular state, so that does not mean religion beliefs do not influence public policy. The majority of Americans living in the US both then and now were Christian, so it's not hard to see how this has influenced our laws and customs over the years.

It prevents govt interference in religous practice. It doesn't prevent govt officials from being religous. In fact it guarantees their right to be such.

The Thomas Jefferson remark?
Posted on 1/20/17 at 5:23 pm to Dawgfanman
"Building a wall of separation between Church & State" restricts the influence of religion in our government.
Posted on 1/20/17 at 5:24 pm to DisplacedBuckeye
Religion influencing government was not the reason for the 1A. Government influencing religion was.
Posted on 1/20/17 at 5:25 pm to DisplacedBuckeye
You'd think by now one of the thousand religions would've been the correct one.

It prevents a state religion. The bill of rights is a list of restrictions on the govt...not the people.

This is not correct, as clarified over and over again by the same men who wrote our Constitution. It's also been affirmed numerous times since.

Like I said, let Thomas Jefferson know.

You also continue to return to this. I've never indicated that it is. Not once.
