The Fed printed 40 trillion in cash we don’t have. 1973 is an irrelevant era economically because we had no real debt to be concerned with increasing the interest on, now we do. Raising rates arbitrarily now will likely increase inflation in the long term while simultaneously reducing growth. With no debt we could have double digit rates, with massive debt double digit interest rates aren’t sustainable.

You want lockdown pandemic priced gasoline when most people weren’t driving or commuting?
Because that’s why the prices were so low.

He has argued today against tax cuts. He argued yesterday in favor of the DSA. I don’t have to assign beliefs. He has stated them for all to see.

sustained inflation in the US is debt driven

Wut?

I think you have confused the national debt with the actual money supply. Sustained inflation isn't just driven by government debt

The Fed doesn't raise rates to fix the government's balance sheet. They do it to change consumer spending.

Can someone explain to me how raising interest rates helps with supply side inflation? I understand how it helps deter people from borrowing money to buy things when there is demand side inflation.

When tariffs caused inflation, you would think the smart move would be to lower interest rates so that it would be cheaper for US companies to build local manufacturing and reduce the amount of items subject to tariffs.

With the rise in fuel costs, and fuel production over 90%, seems like we need to increase capacity or invest in other solutions to bring down the cost of transporting goods.

Higher interest rates also hurt lower income consumers that rely on credit cards to get by.

You can’t be serious? Lol we pay over 1 trillion dollars in interest on the debt every year to bond holders. Bonds determined by interest rates, good Lord see yourself out

Fiscal policy is and should be distinct from monetary policy. Raising rates should deter borrowing, regardless - at some point the fiscal cliff will be unavoidable.

But the 70s are definitely relevant. The 70s teach ua to tackle inflation when we can and stick to it. If not, you are going to get into that stagflation cycle pretty easily - say when growth slows to under a percent or less.

It isn’t distinct, that is the problem

Of course it is distinct. The federal reserve does not pass the federal budget.

What? Pointing out that housing prices when indexed for inflation are similar to what they were (per square foot) in 1976. I didn’t come up with that year. The poster claiming housing was unaffordable did.

It’s amazing to me how many times MAGA posters on here point to Carter and Biden arguably the worst two Presidents in the last 85 years as some barometer to use to try and prop up Trump. They don’t realize what an extremely low bar that is.

Trump is now giving us Biden like results on several metrics and is approaching Biden level on several others. It’s going to be interesting the response when Diesel hits $7 a gallon soon. It’s coming.

Trump exploded it with COVID spending. Then Biden poured some gas on the fire. At least be honest.
