They don't have to fix it. Just slow it the frick down. That would be a victory.

Neither candidate wants to do that.

The other trigger is the looming expiration of much of the 2017 tax law. If Congress doesn’t act by the end of 2025, taxes would rise on most households

This can’t be true. Trump only cut taxes for his billionaire buddies.

I wish trump would talk more about controlling the debt. It’s one of the main issues the separates conservatives from tax and spend liberals.

He never fought to contain it when he was president and I don’t think he’ll do anything if elected again.

When it comes to deficit spending, this country appears to have crossed the divide. No one wants to be told that we have to cut back on spending in order to get it under control so no politician is going to push for that. These days, you don’t get elected by telling people that they won’t get as much from the government. Shame.

I agree. Politicians don't care about debt.

It’s self created in that once politicians saw that they could attain and retain power on the backs of unrealistic, irresponsible, a self interest campaign promises they had to push through in order to attain and retain that power, we lost our minds and with it our consciences. Every generation wants to live their best life, and so the can gets kicked down to their children and grandchildren to pay off so that they can live a better standard of living. People lay this at the feet of the baby boomers, and rightly so, but it also very much infects every generation these days. We are all motivated much more by what we get out of it than what the long term costs will be for generations of Americans in the future.

IN SHORT…. Cutting the debt and shrinking the size and scope of government does not sell as gifts from the treasury does.

That they aren't talking about it is a given. The "why?" is not really addressed.

Why are they talking about it?
Because reporters like Rubin are not asking.

Of course, they're not asking Harris anything, because she's not taking questions.

He later raised taxes and turned on one fellow GOP who spoke up against it.

This year’s budget deficit is on track to top $1.9 trillion

That's ridiculously understated. The estimate for deficit spending for this fiscal year was around $1.8T. As of today we're already at $2.03T. This year the federal government has averaged around $250B in deficit spending each month, if this holds true for the rest of the year then we're going to be far closer to $3T in deficit spending this year than $1.9T.

quote:

Interest costs alone are poised to exceed annual defense spending.

Last year's federal debt servicing was around $1.02T, total defense spending for the year was around $820B.

If the author's starting off with flawed data and a poor view, the rest of the article is likely garbage too.

Well he didn't spend a few extra trillion until mid-2020, so its' not an apples: apples comparison.

All inflation analyses moving forward have to account for that insanity. Trump hasn't been President under that paradigm.
