The annual flu vaccine is based on informed projections of which strains of flu will spread most broadly. How do you demonstrate in advance how accurate the annual projections are prior to peak flu season?

yeah, I think that's the interesting question. I don't think there's a rule saying “10% effective & you're good” kind of a thing. FDA has used several different standards for flu vaccine including surrogate measures like antibody-response/non-inferiority studies rather than a fixed clinical/effectiveness cutoffs. If we're changing that and saying manufacturers now need to show fewer actual cases of flu, I'd want to know what threshold FDA is proposing too. 20%? 40%? and does the lower bound of the confidence interval have to clear it?

This is great and 100% needed.
The other thing the FDA needs to do is actually crack down on the supplement industry. You can sell literal dog shite in a bottle, get a bunch of social media influencers to say it gives you superpowers and the FDA won't do damn thing.

Yeah, some more consistent standards would be good. If we want drug companies to actually demonstrate that their products work, it seems hard to justify letting the supplement world make loosey-goosey health claims with much thinner evidence. Skepticism ought to travel.
