it's not that. it's government imposed limitations on market participants. there are only x medallions and you have to have one to drive a cab. they're worth millions a piece now

Its quite lucrative and largely controlled by the mob. It is a complete shakedown. They run like a million dollars, or they used to pre-uber.

Cab drivers have no shot of ever owning one unless they received one after their cabbie father died. It's really pretty shitty of NY to do.
